Lots of games have been released in the last few years that give you the ability to craft. This genre has gotten highly popular, with various different approaches to it. Here is a list of the best crafting games you can play on PC.

1. Tom Clancy’s The Division

Tom Clancy’s: The Division is an open-world, multiplayer third-person shooter that puts you in control of a Division agent trying to stop the effects of a virus and the organization behind it.

Crafting is a crucial part of this game if you want to get the best out of your gear and survive against tougher foes, be it either NPCs or hostile players. The game lets you craft items like weapons and gear or you can improve and customize your current gear by using different types of Crafting Sources, which you can get from looting corpses or crates. There are also locations which have a specific crafting material that get reset every 2 hours, so you can come back and get some more materials.

The Crafting Station

You can craft items at the Crafting Station which you can find in your Base of Operations. To craft an item you need to have a Blueprint which you can find throughout the city.

Choose from a variety of items to craft.

There are lots of things to craft, from shotguns and assault rifles to backpacks, masks and body armor.

2. No Man’s Sky

No Man’s Sky is an upcoming open-world survival space game that throws you into an infinite procedurally generated universe.

You can do whatever you want. Play as a fighter, a trader or an explorer. It’s up to you. There is no predefined goal in No Man’s Sky. You set your own objectives. Try and reach the center of the galaxy, hunt space pirates, find rare resources to sell for the highest price. You are not forced to do anything. Instead, the game gives you the freedom to make your own choices.

Crafting involves upgrading three things: your weapon, your ship and your suit. You can find different types of these items which have different layouts for slots. Slots can be used for upgrades or for storing items.  There are different types of ships, each suited for different play styles. A trader ship has a larger cargo capacity than other ships allowing for more items and resources to be carried, but they are slower than the explorer ship. Your weapon and suit, on the other hand, can only be upgraded. These two and the ship have their own “slots”. It’s like an inventory but instead of just using it to store items you also use it to place upgrades.

The weapon has four main areas of technology that can be upgraded: Grenade, Laser, Projectile and Scanning. For example, a Land Disruptor is a Grenade technology upgrade which you use as an excavation tool to create craters on the ground by throwing remotely charged plasma grenades. Your suit also has several technology categories that can be upgraded: Armor, Protection, Stamina and Utilities. You can, say, upgrade to a Jetpack which is a Utilities technology upgrade that is quite useful when trying to reach high places but it also helps in exploring underground tunnels because you don’t have to fear about getting stuck. Crafting these upgrades will involve finding a variety of materials found on various planets.

Plutonium, one of the many materials you will find in No Man’s Sky.

You will have to figure out what materials can be found on different planets. There are many different materials, such as Plutonium, Carbon, Silicon and much more.  There are various rules that dictate what kind of material you will find on a planet, things like the distance between the planet and the sun.

Upgrade your weapon or change its ammunition that uses many different kinds of materials.

No Man’s Sky releases on August 12, 2016.

3. Fallout 4

Welcome, survivor, to a world destroyed by nuclear war. Enter Fallout 4, the massive open-world RPG with hundreds of locations, characters and quests. Go alone or side with one of the factions. Build your own settlement. It’s your choice.

Welcome to the Wasteland.

Crafting involves gathering raw components. You gather these materials by scrapping in “Workshop Mode”.  Scrap any junk you find.  There are various crafting stations. The weapons workbench is used to scrap and build weapon mods using parts from various weapons. At the chemistry station you can craft things like medicine, grenades and mines.

Go to the armor workbench to scrap, modify and repair armor and clothing. Use the cooking station to prepare scavenged items or go to the Workshop to scrap and build buildings, furniture, and various other things for your settlement.

You can make stuff like this, too!

Overall the crafting system is complex and there are a lot of things you can scrap to turn into components such as steel, rubber, plastic, leather and more which you can use to make many different kinds of weapons, armor and other things for your settlement.

4. This War of Mine

This War of Mine provides an experience of war from a new perspective. Play as a group of civilians trying to survive a war-torn city struggling with lack of food, medicine and danger from other unfriendly scavengers.

Survival is the main goal of the game. Snipers during the day will stop you from leaving your shelter, so you will need to focus on crafting, trading and taking care of your survivors, while at night you will take one of your civilians on a mission to scavenge for items that will help you stay alive. Protect civilians or sacrifice some of them to ensure longer-term survival.

When it comes to crafting, you start out with a basic Workshop which you use to build other crafting stations, furniture and some materials. Crafting a bed is important because you need to give your characters a good place to rest. Sick and injured characters that rest here have a small chance to recover overnight. Giving the character some bandages or medications while he rests will give him a higher chance to recover. The Radio is also very useful to craft because it provides information on weather forecast, criminal activities and more.

You can upgrade the Workshop to gain access to better items, to things such as a reinforced door, a thermo regulator or a heat lamp.  Other Workstations can also be upgraded and give reduced crafting costs and new items.  All the things you craft will require having components, wood, parts and electric parts. Some may also take a bit of in-game time to craft.

It’s a dark world where survival is key. Trust no one.

A new DLC called The Little Ones released this year, introducing children characters to the game, and new items for children to use. You can make items to entertain them, or teach them how to craft items themselves.

Choose which place to scavenge at.

The complex inventory system

Run for your life!

You can also combine some weapons, such as the baseball bat, to alter its attributes. Putting nine-inch nails through a baseball bat will increase its damage, but will reduce its ability to knock back zombies. Using a hacksaw on a shotgun’s barrel will improve its close range efficiency and lower its weight, but will reduce its range.

How long will you survive?

Engrams, on the other hand, are permanent crafting recipes you can unlock and stay with you even if you die. You can’t loot them and they do not weight or take up any inventory space. Engrams are unlocked by leveling up and spending Engram Points.  After unlocking them you can craft items such as weapons (spears, swords, shields, bows), equipment (fishing rod, radio, GPS, flare gun) and clothing (hats, shirts, pants, boots, gloves).

I wouldn’t stand in front of this dinosaur.

You can also select how many of the same item to craft by clicking the left and right arrows or by putting the number in between the two arrows. Items that cannot be crafted are marked in a light grey color. This could either mean that you don’t have the necessary resources or your character does not know how to craft that item. If your character does not know how to craft the item you are looking for then you will have to find and read a specific book or schematic to unlock the recipe.

Slash zombies to pieces.

There are nearly 400 recipes featuring weapons, clothes, armor, tools, vehicles, medicine, furniture and more.

Every shot counts. Keep an eye on ammo.

The game is currently in Early Access on Steam but has showed great progress so far, improving graphically and featuring more content.

If you want to craft building blocks such as cobblestone, wooden planks or concrete then you will have to use the Blockbench. Need a light bulb, lamp, flashlight or chandelier? Make the advanced Workbench. Use the Furnace to smelt ore into ingots or craft the Sawbench to create chairs, armchairs, doors, tables or even pianos.

The game features beautiful, randomly generated worlds.

When it comes to crafting, you can craft various items, armor, consumables and weapons by combining materials. The crafting window appears over the craftable materials inventory. From here you can add the materials you want into the “Components” part of the crafting window by right-clicking. If it is possible to craft from the material you added then one or more recipes will appear in the “Recipes” window. Move your cursor over one of the recipes to see how much of the materials are required to craft it.  Once you have the amount of materials needed to craft the recipe, right click on it and select the amount you want to craft.

In Rust, each player starts with a list of basic items that can be crafted. If you want to craft something more advanced such as a 9mm Pistol then you will have to study a Blueprint or use a Research Kit on the item to reverse-engineer and learn it. After you have learned the item it will permanently remain on your list of craftable items and will stay even if you die. The list of items you have learned, however, won’t carry on to a different server. It is only permanent in the server you learned it in.

Hunt to survive.

Some items also require having a workbench to craft.  You can craft a variety of items, such as a hunting bow, a large medkit, a handmade lockpick, a large spike wall, a revolver and much more using raw materials such as wood, cloth, leather, gunpowder and more.

Build a base and defend it with your friends.

19. Minecraft

Minecraft puts you in a blocky, procedurally generated world where you can build anything you want. From a simple home to giant castles and cities, anything is possible in the sandbox world of Minecraft.

Crafting is an important part of the game. You will be crafting most of the time to survive. To craft, open up your inventory where you will see a 2x2 crafting grid. Here you can craft some basic items such as wood planks, sticks and torches, but the most important one to craft will be the Crafting Table. Once you craft it, place it on the ground and right click on it. This will show you a 3x3 crafting grid and the items in your inventory. Most of the important or useful items need to have the materials placed in the correct positions on the crafting grid to craft things such as pickaxes, swords, shovels, hoes or armor.

Build epic castles, alone or with friends.

Minecraft is the best-selling video game for the PC and the second best-selling video game of all time. It has sold over 23 million copies on the PC and over 106 million across all platforms.

Go deep into the underground to find and mine precious diamonds.

20. Subterrain

You are Dr. West, the lone survivor of MPO, an underground city on Mars. Battle hunger and thirst, fight enemies, heal your wounds and gather resources to survive the randomly generated top-down open-world of Mars.

A good amount of time will be spent crafting if you want to survive. All of your guns, armor and melee weapons will degrade the more you use them, so at some point you will have to swap, repair or upgrade them. Before you craft an item, you first have to research it. To research an item, you need to sacrifice the item you have to learn how to craft it. Even your degraded equipment can be researched.

The Bio Research System

You can also find two types of blueprints: a bio blueprint, which is green and a tech blueprint, which is blue. These are researched the same way as items are. There are also two research systems that can be used to learn how to produce items with the 3D printer found inside. They are called the Bio and Tech Research Systems, which can be upgraded by finding better software. The Bio Research System is used to research things such as medical kits, oxygen sensors and temperature fuses, while the Tech Research System is used to research armor and weapons.

The Tech Research System

21. Craft the World

Jump in a randomly generated world filled with deadly creatures. Build a dwarf fortress, gather resources and craft any item, weapon, armor you need in this unique sandbox strategy game that mixes elements of Dungeon Keeper, Terraria and Dwarf Fortress.

Craft the World has a user-friendly crafting system filled with recipes that are organized and easily accessible. If you play the campaign mode then you will have to unlock different recipes as you master the different tiers of the Technology Tree.  But in sandbox mode you can craft any item from the start of the game.

Unlock new recipes by progressing through the Technology Tree.

Most of the items will require specific crafting stations. If you want to cook something then you will need a campfire or stove, or if you want to craft some magic potions then you will need a Lab.

Build large dwarf fortresses.

22. Stonehearth

Help a small group of settlers survive in a hostile land. Establish a food supply, build shelter, defend your people and find a way to grow and expand in an epic fantasy setting.

To be able to craft in Stonehearth, you will need to promote one of your workers to a Carpenter. You can do this by heading over to the “Manage Citizen” button and picking one of the citizens to promote to the Carpenter job. Once you have assigned your citizen the Carpenter job, you will then need to build a Workshop, which you can do by heading back to the “Manage Citizen” button and clicking on the Carpenter’s name. A button labeled “Build Workshop” will pop up. Click the button and then click anywhere on the ground to build the Workshop.

Promote a citizen to Footman if you need some defenses for your settlement.

After you’ve set up your Workshop, you can start placing some orders with the Carpenter to build what you want. Click on the Workshop and then click on the anvil in the bottom left corner of the screen. From here you can place orders and manage the current work queue for the crafter. On the left side of the screen is a list of all items that can be crafted. Items that the crafter is unable to craft are grayed out. This might mean that there are not enough resources or the crafter is not at the required level yet. The crafter can level up by gaining experience as they craft items or complete tasks. Once they have enough experience, they will level up and gain new abilities and recipes.

Footmen defending the entrance of the town

Stonehearth is currently in Early Access on Steam.

23. Terraria

Get ready to dive into a sandbox game where you can dig, fight, explore and build. Construct your own city to house the mysterious allies you may find in your travels or delve deep into cavernous expanses in search of treasure and raw materials with which to craft ever-evolving gear. Nothing is impossible in the randomly generated worlds of Terraria.

In Terraria, crafting is done through the crafting bar visible on the left side of the interface below the player’s inventory and shows all craftable items available to the player. The items will only appear in the list if you have the necessary materials in your inventory. Clicking the item in the list will craft it and place the item on the cursor. You can hold the right mouse button to continuously craft the item until the stack is filled.

One of the many things players have made in Terraria.

While some crafting recipes can be made using only the materials in your inventory, most will require a Crafting Station to make their item available. Items that do require a crafting station will appear in the crafting bar while you are standing near the required crafting station, meaning that you don’t have to click on the crafting station to craft the item you want. This means that you can craft from multiple nearby crafting stations at once. There are currently 44 crafting stations in the game, which is a lot compared to some other games.

Explore deep into the underground.

Terraria has been a big hit ever since it released and has sold over 12 million copies.

24. Dig or Die

As an employee of the CRAFT & Co company, you sell advanced machine tools across the galaxy. Unfortunately your spacecraft crashes into a hostile planet. Now you must dig minerals, harvest plants, kill monsters and build a fortress to survive the merciless randomly generated worlds. Use the local resources and the tools you sell to escape the planet.

Crafting is the main way to progress in the game. You can automatically construct tools and objects through the use of advanced machines called Auto-Builders. The Auto-Builder is the first crafting machine you have at the start of the game, which unlocks your first set of crafting recipes for the Tier 1 items that you can craft. Crafting new items may require at least one ingredient item and you can craft by simply clicking on the item you wish to craft in the Auto-Builder menu. There are 5 Auto-Builders you can craft and each Auto-Builder unlocks a new set of crafting recipes and new tiers of items.

Watch out for that lava!

Dig or Die is currently in Early Access on Steam and plans to feature multiplayer modes, more items, weapons, monsters, minerals, plants, giant bosses and a lot more places to explore.

Build structures carefully, or they might collapse.

25. The Culling

The Culling is an online battle royale where you can play solo or in teams of two. Explore, scavenge items, craft weapons and build traps to crush your opponents and come out victorious before the end of the 16-player round.

To craft in The Culling you need to spend F.U.N.C., a substance used to break down items and reassemble them into a new item based on what items were combined. You can also use some objects found throughout the map with your ranged weapon to craft ammunition. It’s a rather simple and unique crafting system that offers a variety of crafting recipes. Craft basic weapons such as a hatchet or blowgun, set up traps such as caltrops or use a number of useful items such as bandages, satchels, explosives or body armor.

Brutal, head-breaking gameplay

You can lower the crafting costs by using the “Cheapskate” perk. The crafting speed can also be increased by using the “Faster Crafter” perk, or if you want your crafted weapons and explosives to have increased damage then use the “Master Crafter” perk.

He’ll never know what hit him.

The game is currently in Early Access on Steam and plans to release next year with new maps, new game modes, new weapons, new traps, new items and much more.

26. Far Cry Primal

Far Cry Primal puts you back into the Stone Age, a time when giant mammoths and sabretooth tigers ruled the Earth. You are the last survivor of your hunting group after a fatal ambush by a sabretooth tiger killed your group.  Learn to craft powerful arsenal, defend from deadly predators and outsmart enemy tribes in the land of Oros.

You take the role of a seasoned hunter named Takkar, the last surviving member of the hunting party. The members of your tribe are reuniting. Unfortunately, a rival tribe finds out about this and launches an attack on your village. After successfully defending your village you set out to kill and bring back the ears of the evil war chief that launched this assault.

Crafting in this game is simple. As you explore the different regions in the game you will find and collect materials such as wood, rocks and reeds. Eventually after collecting enough of these materials the game will give you the ability to craft items such as Spears, Bows or Clubs. You can also craft items that increase your character’s capacity to hold more meat or ammunition. Weapons and upgrades to your character are the two main things you can craft.

Use fierce creatures to your advantage.

This is a great spin off to the Far Cry series. It is the first game set in the Stone Age and even the tribes that inhabit this game speak an inspired Proto-Indo-European language. You can also hunt and tame wildlife to help you in your adventures.

Sneak your way through redwood forests and humid swamps.

27. Kenshi

Kenshi is a single-player squad based RPG that puts focus on sandbox gameplay. Be a farmer, a slave, a trader, a thief, a rebel, a warlord or an adventurer.  You are not the chosen one. The game does not make you a special, powerful warrior. Nobody cares about you. The world does not care if you starve. You don’t have more health points. Slavery is what you will go through. But, if you team up, if you plan, if you prepare, slowly progress, one day you will make your dreams come true.   Work to achieve your goals, build a base, train your men, aid or fight factions and survive in the harsh desert.

In Kenshi you can begin crafting after building a base and once you have the necessary materials. You will need to also find blueprints to be able to craft what you want. There are four types of blueprints: Construction, Medical, Weapons and Armor & Clothing. Blueprints can often be bought from merchants in towns. For example, weapon blueprints can be found at Weapon Traders and will vary depending on which faction trader you are buying it from. After you use the blueprint you will be given the ability to craft the weapon. You can buy Medical blueprints from the Hospital to craft medkits and splintkits which are very useful for healing your squad.

Carry your wounded squad mates back home to safety.

The game is currently in Early Access on Steam and has lots of features such as a realistic medical system, character customization, intelligent AI and more.

Explore a large, over 870 km2 world.

The gaming industry is filled with games that put focus on crafting. Each game has its own way of doing it. Minecraft and Terraria have been the most popular games over the last few years that put focus on crafting. They allow complete creative freedom, but there are many more games that also strive to bring a great game focused on crafting. This is a list that hopes to shed more light into many other great crafting games. I hope you enjoyed. Thanks for reading.
