So, if you don’t have the money or simply want to try out a new fun game, this is a list of some of the best and most enjoyable games you can find online that don’t cost a dime.

We kick off the list with a nice, casual little game that will keep you hooked with pun-errific humor. You know, as in it has lots of puns? The in-game jokes are better, trust me. Your goal is to be filthy rich, and to get there, you need to sell lemons, buy new business ventures, diversify your income and sell stuff on Mars for some reason. As the game announces, it’s “capitalism made easy”.

As easy as a colorful menu.

The interface and actual game are quite simple. See that lemon button? Click it. Click it I say! There you go, you made your first lemonade? Simple, huh? Well, now you have to worry about how to make MORE money. Hurray Capitalism! So, you hire a manager to do the clicking for you, and you buy a new business that you may profit from. And BAM! You’re a quintillionaire.

And when even that’s not enough, then you just straight make up your own Martian currency.

After buying every single business on Earth, you can fund your own private mission to the Moon. Or Mars. And start monopolizing Martian chocolate, or Lunar cheese, or whatever that gives you a profit. Your Earth Dollars are of no use, of course, but you still have the spirit of entrepreneurship, darn it, so you’ll make it work. And it may not be the most flashy entry on this game list, but it sure is fun and addictive, so be sure to check out this free game, and embark in your own capitalist adventure.

You’re thrusted into a warring medieval land, where you can shape your destiny as a warrior or a merchant, amidst the political plots of those in power. Unlike other games that start like that, however, you don’t tame dragons or fling fireballs. Gloria Vicits offers you a different challenge, for it is set in a “low fantasy” world, so it’s not ripe with flashy magic spells like high fantasy, but still has some things that couldn’t happen in the real world. Basically, steel and guts shape the world.

Also, bridges seemed to be a lot more crowded

Driven by a player created economy, everything about this game tries to recreate medieval conditions, such as weapons, armor, crafting recipes, power relationships and architecture. The plot is much more mature, as there are no clear-cut good or bad guys, as well as involving treason and whatnot to thicken the complexity of the plot. So it’s not your average “save the world from the dark forces”, and magic is as subtle as a power-up blessing. All this while exploring an open world that promises to let you do as you please, with no loading screens and no invisible barriers, so you can totally run for hours on end.

“Hadn’t we passed that same rock before?” “Shut up and keep running”.

Funded by both kickstarter and eager patrons who just want to play the darn game already, this is one project that looks both ambitious and totally possible. The best combination, for sure.

So, you’re a tiny guy with strange body proportions in colonial America, with a vast amount of space and lots of time to spend. Here you have to grow your crops, hunt your food, defend yourself from hostile humans, animal and monsters, all while gathering everything you need to thrive in a crafting game. So what’s the first thing you’ll do?

Go to the closest cemetery and research the dark arts, obviously.

In Salem, combat isn’t quite the focus, for crafting is actually the subtitle of the game. As in, the game is actually called Salem: The Crafting MMO.  So you have to craft, whatever you want, farming and mining and basically building settlements and villages for you and your friends. But what about your enemies? Well, you can curse and hex them, their families and their fields, obviously. That’s why you researched the dark arts earlier, remember? All those hours in front of the PC watching your little character plunge into the darkness of forbidden arts? It was all for some good old fashion pettiness. [free056-2]

Those are some nice crops, neighbor! It is a shame I’m a psychopath with access to witchcraft.

Oh, and have I not mentioned that this is a perma-death game? That means that when and if you die, you just…die. You don’t resurrect or load a checkpoint. Friends can bury you, if they want, but you’re still dead. So there are consequences to your actions, and everything that you build will remain there even after you’re gone. Like real life, but with more monsters and witchcraft, I suppose.

You know how, when you live in a fantasy MMORPG land, monsters just appear all the time? I mean, you have to wonder how do kids actually grow into adults without getting eaten by an uber-fire-bear or something. Well, Riders of Icarus is kind of the same, however, you get one glaring difference: you can actually capture and mount those beasts, looking all majestic and wild. [free055-1]

Mount beasts and battle fat half-naked bearded dudes, for some reason.

The combat system is quite good on foot, with your character learning skills according to his class while exploring and running in a 3D visually stunning and detailed world. But the best part is you can actually be the spoiled little brat you’ve always wanted to be. If you see a cool looking creature, you can straight up jump on top of it and try to tame it. When you succeed, you can actually fight on top of it, and the creature will level up and gain new abilities after each battle. So yes, Pegasus vs. Dragon riders is totally a thing you can do.

Or just swarming an ice giant, if you like dragons too.

With land and sky creatures, a promise of constant updates and graphics that make you stare at the landscape instead of cursing your video card, this is one game you should definitely try out.

Were the previous games too pretty for you? Are you yearning for blood, guts, darkness and danger? All while looking amazing in a top hat? Well, Hunt: Horrors of a Gilded Age might just be for you. Set in the late XIX century, you must partner up with some buddies and do some monster killing just to stay alive.

Might be trickier than you think, given the dimensions of that knife.

Focused on co-op gameplay, this game is the action part of a horror story, as there are no jump-scares coming out of nowhere, but danger is always present. Designed to randomize enemies and some elements each time you play it, you can never be sure what you and your buddies will face. Until you actually face it, either screaming or with a grizzled smile.

And matching hats. First impressions are important.

Although the game has gone through some rocky times during its development due to the studio closing and other technical issues, it does seem like quite a bit of fun, even if it’s in an open beta (that means it’s not finished yet, but you can play it and report bugs to the developer). So gear up and brave the night, for monsters are everywhere. And I’m sure you’ll be happy that’s the case, as you’ll have an enormous supply of targets to shoot at. And isn’t that the fun part of hunting monsters? Actually having monsters to shoot at?

Enough with the improbable and unrealistic weapons. Let’s go back to a simpler time, a more brutal time, when men were men, women were women, and guns were slow and crappy to aim with. Let’s go back to the wild west, where tumbleweeds and trains decorated each and every town and you could murder anyone you didn’t like.

And everything looked like a Clint Eastwood movie

In a Fistful of Frags (a not so subtle tribute to the movie a Fistful of Dollars), you are part of a team of different players, be it cowboys or bandits, that has to kill another team of cowboys or bandits. And that’s basically it. You can use old timey rifles and shotguns, which are slow but pack quite a punch, revolvers, tomahawks, axes or your fists. You can even kick a fool and make him fall down a flight of stairs, for all I care. Just have fun.

And don’t forget your face mask. Wild west towns are dusty.

With a small but dedicated community, it would be a shame that this game went into obscurity. After all, it’s really well implemented, maintained and executed. So have a go at it, and start shooting people while making your best cowboy impression.

Too much running around for your taste? You like strategy but also a game with well thought lore and characters? Look no further, for The Elder Scrolls Legends the whole history of the franchise into one Trading Card Game that’s sure to make you happy.

You can’t go wrong with the lizard people. They will rule the world, I tell you.

Drawing inspiration from other card games, this game encourages to collect new cards to build decks and battle other people. You do the battling part by using creature and equipment cards, and making them clash with your opponent’s cards. Apart from the Elder Scrolls Lore, what sets this game apart is the lane system, in which the location of the card will determine how effective it’ll be, for you can only attack creatures in the same lane, be it the left, middle or right one.

Although it is a card game, there are plenty of dramatic explosions. Hope the table doesn’t burn down.

Albeit new to the Trading Card Gaming scene, the official site does offer tutorials for beginners and advanced strategies, and the cards themselves draw from every game and piece of lore of the whole saga, so it’ll have something for fans and non-fans alike.

Chances are you like superheroes. And why wouldn’t you? Even if you’re not a fan of the comics, the movies are quite enjoyable and action packed, with colorful heroes and villains. And with Marvel being such a big hit these days, wouldn’t you like to actually control one of their amazing heroes? To thwart a supervillain plot of world domination? To wreck whole city blocks, while wearing cool armor? Well then, Marvel Heroes is for you.

Admit it Hulk, this actually makes more sense than purple shorts.

In this MMOARPG (that’s quite an acronym), you take your superhero and basically fight anything you would expect him to fight, from faceless spandex wearing goons to supervillains and even other superheroes. But this is an action RPG, so you’ll attack and dodge in real time, with no auto-target, except for abilities that make sense. As you level up and complete quests, you’ll obtain different powers, abilities and items that will help you smash your enemies, investing in several character-specific ability trees and unlocking new characters.

Team up and irresponsibly open fire in a crowded city, with no regard for human life. It’s awesome.

So jump in and show the world you too can shout catchphrases while mowing down hordes of nameless villains. Or just troll everyone with Deadpool. Your choice.

So, not satisfied yet? What about not choosing an existing superhero, but creating one? Or how about a villain? Take control of your own custom-made superhero and get thrown into an apocalyptic scenario inside the DC universe, where you’ll decide the outcome of the Earth.

If you want to do so by shouting, be my guest. It apparently works.

As I said before, you have the liberty of creating your own character, choosing gender, features, personality and abilities. Once you finish the tutorial, you’ll join either the Justice League or The Society (depending on alignment), and continue leveling up and investing points in abilities and powers to make your own creation a force to be reckoned with. Combat is largely similar to other action oriented MMOs, so you’ll run around punching and countering enemies in large stages.

Wave that chain in the air as if you don’t care.

Apart from constant updates and DLCs, you’ll find a series of seasonal events and missions, that will only be available for a month or so, making them an exciting change of pace for your character. So, if you want a universe that’s a little grittier and a little different, but still plagued by supervillains and superheroes, this is your game.

Who says every online game must be about monsters, robots and swords? What about some love for sports? Welcome to Freestyle 2: Street Baskteball, where you will dribble and score in style with or against your friends, playing matches and earning virtual street cred.

The angrier you look, the better you play.

The matches are played in a half court, with street basketball rules. These aren’t so different from normal rules, and they are explained both in-game and on the website. You play 1 on 1, 2 on 2 or 3 on 3, with statistics and points awarded according to your performance. You can then use these points to buy skills, clothes and accessories, with real money being an option too.

The graphics are cell shaded, and both the visual design and the music is crafted to match a Hip-Hop vibe, but also allows for a multitude of silly costumes. So prepare for an urban style with lots of shirtless dudes with updates that introduce martial artists and Mexican hats.

If you want quick matches, colorful characters and not a second of bothersome plot details, Brawlhalla has you covered. With the simple idea of having fun with entertaining and fast paced brawls, this 2D action packed fighting platformer is lightweight in memory size but quite addictive.

I love how the guy on the left has a smirk while hiding from the action.

Characters range from knights, cowboys and samurais to undead and Vikings, so you’ll find plenty of options. Every one of them has two weapons, different stances and many alternate appearances. The movesets are unique yet structured the same way: you have a quick attack, a heavy attack and you can throw stuff.

Everyone has a similar moveset, and some characters even have the same kind of weapons, so you’ll find that all the lance users like stabbing from a distance. However, depending on the character you choose, you will find they each have a signature move. So if you can master a mace wielding character, you’ll be able to play with other characters who uses  a mace, but will still find it fun to try new characters.

You know you’re in trouble if you start leaving puffs of smoke around.

With constant updates, a simple yet complex gameplay and a variety of characters to choose from, and the fast pace of the matches (and the fact you don’t need to sink hours of gameplay to have fun), I cannot stress how simply addictive this game can become. Beware, but definitely play it.

When we talk about war games, we usually control a soldier on the battlefield. And that’s fun, for sure, but sometimes you just need a little artillery in your life. Enter World of Tanks, where you are thrown inside a virtual but realistic tank, in a battle for survival against an enemy team.

Sniping is more fun when you know you’ll leave a flaming crater on the ground.

The gameplay is basically either a deathmatch where you have to eliminate the enemy team before they destroy you, or a capture the base mechanic, where you must hold a certain position to win. The maps are randomly generated, and the tanks are divided into several categories, including light, heavy, medium and so forth. The designs are based either on historical tanks, designs that were never built but existed, and creative tanks that have never existed. To further make customization possible, tank parts can be upgraded separately, so you can pick and mix guns and armor.

Or if you don’t care for design and planning, you can ram into the enemy and hope for the best.

With an interesting concept and fun execution, World of Tanks will please both the hardcore military history buff and the casual admirer of artillery-caused explosions. Be careful where you aim.

Themes: Manga-like characters, Swords and magic.

Continuing with the 2D theme for a little longer, here comes another title that will make you appreciate quick combat on top of platforms. This time is the sidescroller adventure called Elsword, where you create a character with powers and abilities that let you interact with a colorful world brimming with action, monsters and rivals. And it’s an MMORPG, so you can make friends and punch enemies until you faint from exhaustion.

Or punch friends and make enemies. I won’t judge you.

Inspired by the Japanese comics called Manga, this cell shaded game will bring plenty of over the top magic attacks, big weapons and big monsters. You can collect new items by killing stuff, as well as leveling up your character and investing your experience points in new abilities and attacks. All while you explore a sidescrolling world that’s surprisingly deep for only being 2D.

Oh, and don’t forget gravity defying hairstyles. It has those too.

With so many different customization options, it will be difficult to find someone who looks exactly the same as you, as you create your very own strangely attired party. So hop in alone or with a friend, and let the fight begin.

With so much seriousness going around in some of the entries of this list, it is refreshing to see a game that provides a more tongue-in-cheek experience, and still can get deep and enjoyable. In Orcs Must Die! Unchained, you have to…well, kill orcs. With funny voiced characters and a humongous amount of traps.

So many body parts, so little time.

This is a Tower Defense mixed with a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena. What this means is that you’ll have a path to defend from hordes of evil minions that will try and destroy your base, and you can do that by placing traps and using your character (hero) and his or her different abilities to exterminate the enemy before your base becomes rubble. With different heroes, plenty of traps, ranks to gain and upgrades to find, you’ll definitely spend time planning and customizing until your murder-stages are just right.

If I smile, no one will notice I’m running the hell away.

With the option to battle other players and send minions of your own, or just teaming up with your friends, Orcs Must Die! Unchained deserves to have an exclamation mark in the middle of its name.

What’s better than being an awesome space ninja in a highly detailed galaxy, with awe inspiring spaceships full of sparkly lights and weird looking, hostile aliens? Being part of a TEAM of space ninjas, of course. Warframe will let you do that when controlling a “Tenno”, master of blade and gun, in a futuristic and carnage-filled deep space conflict.

Dashing through your skull, in a sci-fi spaceship hall. It’s Christmas.

A third person shooter, Warframe lets you cooperate with other players in order to assault enemy forces in a multitude of stages, using various skills and abilities specific to your own warframe (that’s what we’re calling armor, ok?). You keep playing, you keep unlocking warframes and abilities, being able to tackle more and more difficult objectives.

You will need a bigger gun if… Oh, nevermind.

With constant updating, fluid and fast gameplay and animations, and a cool factor that cannot be measured without making up new words, Warframe is an excellent cure for that space gun-wielding ninja itch you didn’t know you had.

From the makers of World of Tanks, we have another war game that will satisfy your desire for explosions and military warships. World of Warships lets you take command of giant, floating killer ships and sail away to adventure and conflict.

By the way, that is an unacceptable landing technique.

The game is played in team matches, with each player controlling a different ship. Through teamwork, careful planning, dumb luck and lots of explosions, your objective is to sink the enemy team and protect your teammates. Easier said than done, though, as each ship has its own classification (destroyers, cruisers, battleships, and aircraft carriers), and thus will vary in armor, speed, firepower and how cool they look. To make matters even more unique, each ship has access to a different tech tree (determined by their allegiance to one of the 8 different navies) that will allow you to level up and strive to have the biggest, meanest warship of all.

I just killed a seagull, destroyed a plane and sunk a warship. Ok, I actually just shot randomly. Don’t judge.

Because you get paired with people of your own level, it is easy to enjoy it as a beginner or advanced player. So you can shoot blindly and hope for the best, enjoying the resulting fireworks, or get really serious and use the historic and detailed vessels to brew the best strategy you can. Either way, I’m sure your warmongering hours will be epic.

Based on the popular TV show that spawned a successful series of movies, Star Trek Online offers you the opportunity to take on the role of a starship captain and fly into the galaxy, managing resources and completing missions for your chosen faction. And you’re at war, by the way, so try not to die or get your crew killed.

And try not to start a diplomatic incident by correcting Klingon pronunciation, either.

As a captain, you have the option of completing missions and upgrading your ship, waging war or exploring different planets. You can do so by yourself, by using your crew as an armchair tyrant, or joining up with other players. And you can do all that with a truly unique character, as the amount of options between races, skills and ships will make you able to tailor your game to your exact needs.

Even if your needs are to destroy everything that reminds you of your Tetris-based frustrations.

With lots of detailed lore for anyone who really likes the Star Trek universe, but just enough information for anyone who would rather just start shooting at things and teleporting to unknown planets, this is one game that continues to expand and please their player base. And with more than 5 years’ worth of updates and expansions, there’s always something to do.

Although still in development and not exactly free at the moment, Faeria promises a deep, fun and original blend of card and board games that will not cost you a penny. Set in a fantastical land with soothing visuals and music, you will battle players with your own deck of legendary creatures and lands while building a unique world each time you play.

Hard to argue with a giant tree, so let’s begin.

The board is made up of many hexagons, and each time you play a land card, an actual piece of terrain is summoned into existence at the tile you choose. This terrain affects the creatures, not only with bonuses, but also because they actually need to be able to walk on top of something. But once they reach your opponent, they will crush him for you, so you better treat them well, ok?

That’s the most eloquent summary ever; thanks little creature.

While many features are still in development, with changes being introduced so regularly that it’s hard to keep track of everything, this is one game to be in the lookout for, especially if you have a soft spot in your heart for fantasy, strategy and kind looking turtles.

Continuing with the theme of card games that don’t actually play like card games, we have Chronicle: RuneScape Legends. A simulation of a tabletop game, instead of throwing creatures and magic at your opponent as a maniac, it makes you invest in your hero’s adventure, with the final goal of gaining enough gold and experience so you can bash your opponent’s skull.

All while having a gigantic grinning overseer. Not creepy at all.

This might sound strange for a card game, and that’s actually its charm. The board where you play the game (remember it’s the simulation of a tabletop board game) Is a book. Yes, a literal book. And inside the book, there is a map that your little character explores. As you play cards, different monsters and activities will present themselves on the board, so playing a card with a goblin will place said goblin on the board, where the character will do battle with it. Why would you want that? Without enemies to practice with, your hero wouldn’t level up and would remain a pathetic weakling. So you shape and plan this little adventure for your hero, with obstacles and adventures, with the dream of emerging bloody but unbowed, ready to smash your opponent’s character into submission. And then, sweet victory.

Do it for the lil’ guy. Just look how happy he is.

If you are already a fan of Runescape, you’ll find that Chronicles is a fun new approach to old characters and settings. And if you don’t know what I’m talking about, don’t worry, it’s still a great game with lots of options to level up and have a unique experience. After all, as you keep unlocking cards and building your deck, you’ll find that no two matches will be the same. Have fun questing.

Themes: Mythological brawls.

An MOBA with a twist, Smite pits gods and characters of legend against each other, in battles of mythic proportions. Like, literally, you’re playing with Thor against Zeus and SunWuKong. That’s pretty mythic.

Where else would you see Odin get killed by a ten year old who has serpent wolves instead of legs?

As your typical MOBA, the players are divided into two teams, with each team trying to destroy the enemy base. In this case, the base actually is a literal Titan, so that’s fun. Along the way, you find creeps, turrets and enemy gods blocking your way. Fairly simple. However, this MOBA is played from a third person perspective, with the camera focusing on the back of your character. This means the action is a lot closer, there are no auto attacks with auto-targeting, and you can’t just fly through the map to see what’s up.

Which is kind of important, because “up” is where some angry monkey gods like to hang out.

With such a simple change of perspective, the game plays entirely different, with a lot more emphasis to “skill shots”, which means having good aim. With different game modes that let you spice up the encounters with different mechanics, such as capturing territories or an all-out arena, this is the perfect game if you love MOBAs but crave a different experience whatsoever.

Thrusted in the middle of an explosive battle between the Warface forces and the Blackwood army, you’ll have to shoot your way out of the conflict if you hope to stay alive. Using rifles, grenades, handguns and facing the occasional robot, you’ll have to rely on skill and teamwork to crush the opposition.

I’m totally helping, guys. Just keep the robot occupied.

A multiplayer first person shooter, Warface has the traditional team matches that will leave you feeling as a true soldier or punch your keyboard in frustration, depending on the outcome. You choose your class, and weapon, get assigned to a team, and you try to place your bullets in an enemy’s body until he/she doesn’t move anymore. Simple. Or you can choose to play co-op, and instead mow down enemy waves. The cool thing that sets the game apart, though, is the constant updating and introduction of new missions, maps and game modes that always leave you wanting more.  And the weapons, although named strangely due to trademark issues and whatnot, mainly are faithful adaptations of modern weaponry, so any gun fan will love it, even if he or she cringes at first with the “incorrect” name.  

Pro tip: avoid getting crushed by tanks. You know, like that guy on the floor? Don’t do that.

Even if the core mechanics are what we are used to in other titles, with high quality graphics and fluid animations, this FPS is fun and varied, and it will keep giving you reasons to remain trigger-happy.

You know, the more traditional approach to card games is quite fun, but it can leave you without a sense of, you know, growing. After all, you can only get more cards, but the ones you have will never change. Or that’s what happened before Spellweaver came into play, as it is a card game that will let you use decks of creatures and magic while you’re actually upgrading and evolving your hero. So you get new stuff all the time. And that’s awesome.

If only gold and fame were so easy to get in real life.

The game is designed to be easy to pick up, while retaining much of its Magic The Gathering roots (the granddaddy of trading card games). However, creatures are now assigned a certain speed, with quick guys being weaker than some of their heavy companions. This is a balanced way to encourage different paces for the match, and lets you choose how you want to play. And with the hero progression that lets you unlock new abilities and resources, you will feel as you evolve from a weak newbie into a hardened veteran.

Tired of realistic military-grade guns? What about shooting lasers or fireballs to your enemies? You, sir or lady, want to play Loadout, where you control ridiculous looking characters with even more bizarre guns, letting bullets and the aforementioned fireballs fly.

And burn your enemies to a crisp.

It’s easy to notice it’s not an overly serious games, with the wacky characters and silly animations. But the focus goes to the guns themselves, as each one of them may be customized. And when I say customized, I mean it: each part of the gun, from the trigger to the barrel, can be mixed and matched until you get it just right. Then, it’s a matter of testing it out in a team battle, where each team either tries to capture the hammer (kind of a flag, but with more blunt force) or kill every enemy.

Even if you die from a rocket to the face, you got to try your jet boots.

Silly and free, with rocket boots and gory cartoon violence, Loadout offers a fun and quick experience for those who want it, but still manages to have a lot of customization depth for the hardcore among us.

A mod for Half-Life 2 that got too fun to only be featured as a simple mod, No More in Hell is inspired by the Living Dead Series, which means it’s about zombies. A lot of them. You take the role of one of the survivors after a Zombie apocalypse that must defend themselves until they’re rescued. So load your shotgun and fire away.

Shotgun? Who needs a shotgun with THESE guns? *points at muscles*

Using more than 30 weapons, including handguns and the aforementioned shotgun or even the mighty chainsaw, you must defend your shelter as if your digital life depended on it. Because it does. If you choose the objective mode, you actually have to look for the rescue vehicle, which will never be at the same place twice. And if you choose survival, you’ll have to tackle wave after wave of the zombie horde, until the vehicle comes to you.

Other survivors? No dude, it’s just me. TAKE OFF, NOW.

Either way, you need to be a team player and blow the brains out of any zombie you see. With critical acclaim and a continuous development, this not so little mod is expected to surpass expectations, which is a lot to say, because even now it’s really fun to play.

Do you know about Dungeons & Dragons? The tabletop, pen and paper original RPG? If you don’t, suffice to say that all RPGs owe something to the granddaddy of them all. If you know about it, then you’re in for a treat, as Neverwinter is set in the world of D&D. Having just repaired a city and trying to expand a little, it turns out a crazy Lich Queen decides to attack and spoil everyone’s fun. It is up to adventurers like yourself to follow the plot and make everything right again, by killing lots of monsters and talking to everyone you encounter.

I get the feeling I should be attacking the giant spider rather than the ground.

The combat is not rolling a dice and waiting it to do something. Oh no. It is fast paced real time combat, with no auto attacks and no automatic targeting. You can choose between one of the eight classes of D&D, which are: Barbarian, Bard, Druid, Monk, Paladin, Ranger, Sorcerer and Warlock. Each one has its own strengths and weaknesses, and although you can play solo, it is geared more for party play than anything else, as you can then take a support role without fear of being too squishy for bosses.

Right in the neverwinter. *giggles*. Yes, I’m an adult, why do you ask?

Apart from all the loot and the well-crafted environments, you also have quite a unique feature: the Foundry. Feeling too bored with the available content? Well then, create your own and stop whining. The Foundry lets players do just that, technically offering infinite gaming possibilities. So hold my calls; I’ll be quite busy.

So another one for war history enthusiasts, War Thunder allows the player to take control of several vehicles to wage war against your opponents. And I say vehicles because you can use either planes or tanks, which are designed with an emphasis in realism and as a tribute to their real world counterparts.

Fly with me, let’s just fly away. Dun du dun dun dun.

The matches are team-based, where you can take the role of a soldier of one of the featured nations, and you basically have to kill the other team. For aircraft, the nations are the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, the Japanese Empire and the United States. For tanks, we have United States, Great Britain, Germany, and Russia.

Uhm, was this your wall? Sorry, it’s my first day.

But even if the combat is quite exhilarating, especially when soaring the skies with an enemy hot in your trail, if you are a hardcore fan, you can actually crank the difficulty to “realistic”, where the usual assistance is no longer found, and you really feel as if you are inside an airplane ready to fight. Or you can wait until April Fools day comes around and you can fly magical ponies. But still, it is quite an ambitious game that will definitely surprise you. So, give it a go, will you?

Did you see the “Massively” right there in the genre? I wasn’t kidding. Imagine a first-person shooter with over 2000 players at the same time, and then stop imagining and play Planetside 2, for it is exactly that. Pledge allegiance to one of the three empires and fight for control of the planet Auraxis, winning over territory and becoming an unstoppable force of war.

Play “Ride of the Valkyries” for full effect. Tan ta ta TAN TAN!

You can be one of the several classes, ranging from heavy armored to engineers, each with its own weapons and abilities. So infiltrate a base secretly with the aptly named Infiltrator, or just blow everything up with the Heavy Assault. The point is to gain control of the hexagonal portions of the map, cooperating with hundreds or thousands of other players in a full blown war. Each territory has resources for the war effort, so it’s not just blindly attacking. Strategy goes a long way.

Cool guys look away from explosions.

It is one of the best free shooters out there, with plenty of futuristic and specialized guns that you can upgrade and acquire, researching new abilities and killing people of the opposing factions. Holder of the Guinness World Record for the biggest first-person shooter battle with 1158 players shooting at each other at the same time, you’ll probably find some action that will cater to your taste.

You like all the RPG elements of a classic fantasy world, but think your games need less gore and more razzle dazzle? Well then, let’s step away from dirty battlefields and play with little shiny gems, as you take on the role of the leader of an adventurer band that will take on enemies and monsters, exploring different kingdoms and battling on a match-3 puzzle board.

Are you striking me with YOUR soul, or are you hitting mine? Because that’s rude.

What is a match-3 game, I hear you ask. Well, it’s basically a puzzle game where the objective is to move around the pieces in order to match 3 of the same type. But because we’re adventurers with magic, the little gems are not purely cosmetic: each of them corresponds to a certain attribute. So if you need a fire attack to be more effective, you have to match three little flames. Each character you unlock and use to play has a different ability, such as a healer that, well, heals, or a warrior that’s best suited to cracking skulls.

Hope you brought your walking shoes, because there’s a lot to explore.

There is of course a story mode, and each of the seventeen kingdoms offer 35 challenge matches, so there’s enough content to keep you busy. The PvP is separated, and you can either progress enough to battle human players in the Arena, or just invade their game and automatically play against an AI with their cards. So, casual and fun if you like to try, quite challenging if you obsess over being the best and grinding daily. Have fun with your jewels.

In Wakfu, you need to defeat an ogre who murdered her love and cried for a thousand years atop a mountain. And that’s one of the weirdest sentences I’ve written. It makes sense in context. But whatever the goal, you must explore a colorful and rich environment with your hero, battling enemies in a square grid with sword, magic or fists. The world is yours to explore and change, so have a blast.

Break the laws of physics, I won’t judge.

You must first create a character, choosing from the 16 classes available. And don’t worry, this is not like other games where you hit the max level just to realize those shiny late-game abilities are actually boring: each character starts with all spells and abilities, with leveling up being used to strengthen the ones you actually like. Combat is turn-based and takes place in a grid, borrowing from tactical RPGs where position is as important as strength. So if you’re squishy, get yourself a tanky friend so no one touches you as you fling spells like a maniac.

Are we over or underwater? *Shrugs* I’ll just attack everything on sight.

Visually distinctive and cartoonish, Wakfu mixes a good amount of humor and serious combat, as well as beautifully designed characters and environments for the delight of your pupils. There is, in fact, a French cartoon based on the characters and world, and it has been a while since they launched a kickstarter to dub it to English. So if you fell in love with Wakfu, maybe that’s something you might want to check out.

Boom! Or your death. Depends on skill, really.

A third person shooter with an overabundance of giant mutated monsters, you are given the opportunity to explore the open world and change it as you see fit. There is no reset button, so if you crashed and burned into a rock, next time you are by that rock you’ll see your charred hopes and dreams again. Loot is to be found everywhere, and even if you choose a race and alignment, those purely determine how you start, as no weapon or ability is barred for any “class” or “race”, so you can just pick up every single weapon you’d like.

Sonic has seen better days. Kill it with fire!

The combat is fluid and the enemies are quite well designed, so it is quite satisfactory to mow the floor with them. You will find quests and missions, and many other players too, so you have everything you need to have a good time. It also bears to say that this is a tie-in with the TV show of the same name, so if you’re crazy about lore and the story, you have an entire different medium to keep exploring this crazy and dirty world.

We have plenty of games in which players shoot at each other. They’re fun, they’re quick, and they satisfy our violent needs in a harmless way. But it’s time to bring the big guns now. Instead of being soldiers with an unrealistic tolerance for bullet wounds, Hawken lets you control a mechanized suit as you kite through the battlefield looking for other heavy metal murder machines, in an effort to shoot them until they explode.

Everyone knows the shark paint makes it more resistant to gunfire.

Played from a firsr-person point of view, you control a biped battle mech that falls under one of three categories: A-class, B-class, and C-class. A-class are light and agile, but not as well armored as the heavy but slow C-class, with the B-class falling in-between. But don’t expect the heavy ones to take a single step every hour, as each mech is equipped with booster packs and can slide through the ground with deadly grace. Weapons have infinite ammo, although they can overheat, so fire away but…responsibly, I guess?

Nothing like a searing-hot steel ball to melt competition away.

Its different game modes involve team versus team battles, where you have different objectives from collecting Energy Units (so you can launch your team’s battleship to the enemy base) to just killing every enemy you see. With its nine maps and constantly introducing new vehicles, it is not a game you can whine about not having enough variety. The level up system that lets you customize your mech with new items or paintjobs, as well as acquiring and customizing new mechs, so this is the perfect game for people who like lots of ammo and robotic battles.

Here’s something for all car aficionados. Embark in the frenetic world of urban racing, going around the globe as fast as your car will let you. Be it alone or as a part of a team, World of Racing will deliver high octane races for everyone who dares.

In case you forgot which game you were playing, here’s one giant reminder.

The car models come directly from the heavy hitting auto companies such as Chevrolet, Mercedes Benz, Fiat, Renault, etcetera, so expect to drive everyday your-grandma-make-own vehicles to luxury you-must-sell-your-liver-to-afford supercars. Races are of course the main focus, but there is a constant stream of challenges and team-based competitions, where coming first gives you points, but doing it in style gives you more. You can even crash into someone else who’s trying to complete a challenge, if you’re feeling particularly evil-minded.

Just try not to crash because you were distracted by the shiny lights, ok?

An unusual entry for multiplayer online games, it offers a refreshing experience to those who are fed up with so many bullets and instead crave for speed and internal combustion engines. So give it a ride, and try not to hit too many buildings.

An exclusive title for mobile devices, Heroes of Camelot will let you become a hero… of Camelot. Pretty self-explanatory. What you don’t know yet, though, is that you will have to use wits and patience to ultimately defeat the Black Knight, enemy of King Arthur and Merlin. Recruit your allies and take control of legendary characters as you battle your way to fame.

Without this game you can be cool, but you’ll never be I’m-riding-a-battle-wolf cool.

You do so by collecting and upgrading cards that represent your character. Quite simple compared to other games, your entire team shares both health and attack, and it’s a matter of reducing the enemy’s health to zero before he can do the same to you. The abilities of each card are what make or break the match, and they all can be leveled up with enough experience and patience.

Remember the schoolyard “My father can beat yours” drama? Father Maleficent is the winner, hands down.

Another feature that is sadly missing from many card games but is included in this one, is the opportunity of create and customize your own guild, making friends and banding up to take on bigger and more difficult bosses. So, given the simplicity of the gameplay and the quick and enjoyable pace, this is great for both adults and kids to enjoy.

When you’re playing an online capture the flag match, do you often ditch your weapons and go full melee on your naïve enemies? If you said yes, you fun psycho, Street Warriors Online is for you, as it features team matches with nothing but your fists and feet, and the occasional flying barrel.

Do a barrel roll! Sorry, couldn’t resist.

Set in the underworld of street brawls, you must team up with a bunch of other fighting enthusiasts and beat the crap out of the enemy team. Simple, violent and fun. You can either choose to be a quick Swarmer with health regeneration, a heavy-hitting Bruiser, or the all-around balanced Slugger. You also have lots of attacks at your disposal, but will have to earn experience to unlock them and customize your fighter. So if you want to be a specialized dropkick master (why wouldn’t you), you’ll have to earn by punching people. And that’s a sweet progression system, right there.

Nothing personal, I just want to punch harder and your face is great practice.

Being a game in development, it nonetheless has a great variety of clothes and power-ups (in the form of cards you unlock through more fighting). The objectives of each match are quite standard for team online matches, so you have your usual capture the flag variation, the conquer a territory, and the fan-favorite death-match. So knuckle up, and see you on the streets. The virtual ones, mind you, I don’t really encourage you to go out and punt a puppy or anything. Just good and harmless fun.

The World Tree is in danger (haven’t we had this problem before? No?). You have flashy weapons, magic and a thirst for adventure. Logic dictates you must quest to the unknown, battle monsters and pick up whatever isn’t nailed to the ground, in this fast paced online world where you reap (and thus, rip) the souls of your enemies to strengthen your own abilities.

You also get to smash strangely looking robots (that heap of parts on the left) with a giant sword.

You can play as one of five classes: Warrior, Archer, Rogue, Guardian, and Sorceress. With a more traditional MMORPG gameplay in mind, you will use your abilities by clicking on them or using hotkeys, targeting enemies and dishing out damage. Experience is abundant and level progression is actually fun and not a chore, so you won’t have to wonder if the bazillion enemies you just obliterated actually helped you in any way. And when you’re tired of battle, you can actually pick up a hobby, such as alchemy or cuisine.

Or killing more stuff.

Perhaps one of the most fun experiences is being part of a guild, and then declaring war on another guild. The battles that ensue will make sure no one crosses you again… or make you so hated you will be crossed again, constantly. But barring any warmongering tactics, this game offers a fun yet more traditional experience, with lots of dungeons and quests that can actually be replayed as a stronger version of themselves, so you will always have something to do. And before you go, do keep in mind that the developers actually have a free companion app that lets you manage stuff from outside your PC, so that’s quite handy, too.

Set in London so everyone knows that the US is not the only place where videogames take place, this first-person shooter will throw you into the aftermath of a radiological attack. The ensuing chaos is perfect for a trigger happy crew of mercenaries who will wage a street war against each other.

It's quite difficult to throw a grenade with such a big backpack, but it’s worth it.

You choose three mercs from the available characters, with the option to freely change to one of them between lives. As in, you cannot change while playing, but you can do so when waiting to respawn. Separated into teams of two, players must then fulfill objectives before their enemies do the same in order to win. And of course, these objectives always include a healthy dose of bullets, as they’ll have you plant bombs and defend extraction vehicles, among other things.

There’s also an unusual amount of spanking, it seems.

Apart from the obvious upside of being a fun shooting game, players can obtain several cards with different level of rarity. These cards will give different customization options, from new hats to augmentations, so you can move faster and look more dandy. Being that each merc comes with a specific pack of weapons and abilities, you’ll find the gameplay to be varied enough to keep playing past the point where it’s healthy to have so much fun.

Have you ever watched a John Woo movie before? Because you’re actually going to play in one of them. Double Action is not about shooting your enemy, but rather shooting them in style.

That is both impractical and awesome.

Originally a mod for the Source engine, Double Action places players in the shoes of characters with no discernible or deep backstory, instead just being cool or silly avatars of all your stuntman dreams. You must proceed to battle opponents, survive checkpoints, capture a briefcase full of money or be the first to take down a wanted criminal.

And scaring the sh*t out of doves.

Being able to choose from five “style skills” (marksman, athlete, bouncer, reflexes, nitrophiliac) that augment an aspect of gameplay, such as the slow motion or how hard your fists hit, this game will have you wondering how can something so silly be so fun.

Taking a hint from “The Expendables” movie, Broforce the game has evolved into this free to play 2D mayhem called the Expendabros, where the pixelated graphics don’t actually obscure that much the bloody limbs and the awesome explosions. The plot loosely follows the movie, but you only need to know that you and your aging but still cool bros are going to kill some bad dudes.

Love it how they’re like “What?” even when they are already falling to their death.

The levels are sweet and short, and the objective is simply to get to the end while killing everything in your path. To this effect, you must choose one of the 7 different characters inspired by the movie. The thing is that each of them have different weapons, like guns or knives, and abilities like climbing vertical terrain. So even if you play the same stage over and over again, each character will offer a completely new experience.

I hadn’t even noticed I had to save something, with all the death-blades around.

A nice little feature is that the environment is actually destructible, so if you want to avoid a trap, you can actually just explode the ground under it and tunnel your way through. It also warms my heart that this game features local co-op, seeing how rare it has become, so even if you’re connection goes down for God knows what reason, you’ll still be able to play with a buddy in your computer. What are you waiting for? Go explode some pixelated butt.

Fishing Planet is about exploring the vast underground fortress of… just kidding. It’s about fishing. But not any kind of fishing, though. What this game has in store for you is deep, visually stunning and nerve relaxing fishing. You’ll strive to lure the biggest and meanest fish, while using your dexterity and specialized equipment to capture a true river monster.

Nothing that can bend my fishing rod so much is going to be cute, I assure you.

The fishing is done through an interface that makes you take control of direction of the pitch, the reel speed, how you move the rod, etcetera. Be careful not to break the line, and scout for the best area to corner that sneaky fish that you’ve been trying to catch. As a sportfishing simulator, there is great care placed in the different equipment you can unlock, with each having its own characteristics and advantages depending on what you’re fishing. Cheap and low quality bait will be good for Panfish, but Channel Catfish might be a little more picky.

They won’t comment on your hat, though, so go nuts.

With each fish caught giving you experience and access to more and better areas, the game offers you a progression system that’s natural and gives you something to work for, even if you’ve had a session of bad luck. All in all, relaxing but quite complex, this is one simulator that will de-stress you without all the mosquito-bites.

Tailored as any MMORPG with character customization, item gathering, quest fulfilling and enemy slaying, Blade and Soul does something really well: combat. It’s quick, seamless and encourages (and is quite dependent on, honestly) combos, making it closer to a fighting game than other titles in this list. The moves are flashy and fun to watch, so you’re sure to spend an inordinate amount of time honing your battle skills. Of course you will have masters that guide you and help you obtain new skills, but because you have an open world and many challenges, it’s up to you how you want to progress.

Like progressing into the stomach of this fool with my flaming shoe.

Being an MMORPG, character customization is quite expansive, as you’ll always find new items to fiddle with, ranging from the useful to the silly. If you want to become a martial arts master but dread exercise, behold your fun alternative. Good luck.

Have you ever dreamed of being naked in a zombie apocalypse, where everything kinda looks like a cube? If you have, you seem like a fun weirdo, and we should definitely hang out. But even if not, Unturned will totally persuade you that you’ve been missing out, as you loot and fight your way through hordes of the undead.

Just be happy no one expects you to clean up afterwards.

At the beginning of the game, you get thrusted into the map without anything. You must then proceed to find and loot tools and weapons that will help you against a never-explained undead assault. But this is “survival”, remember? So you also need to guard off cold, starvation, thirst and disease. This complicates matters, of course, but will let you explore and come up with nifty strategies that will offer an engaging experience that will have you figuratively glued to your seat.

Don’t know if a zombie or a player that hasn’t slept for days.

The multiplayer mode is lots of fun, too, as you can share and cooperate between players. Or, if the server allows for it, backstab everyone and steal all their guns and explosives, strapping yourself with inordinate amounts of C-4, and run into a mob of zombies head-first.

It’s also interesting to note that this game was done by a single young adult (is that how you call them? I feel old). Call me dramatic, but to think this was done by a 18 year old while I have never developed a videogame makes me feel a little useless. Whatever, I get to play the game for free and receive constant updates without actually doing something productive, so ha!

17). Block and Load

Not only reflexes and trigger happy fingers win a match. You’ve got to plan out, build and expect the unexpected. That’s the driving force behind Block and Load, where every block counts, and every time you play you’ll construct a different death trap for your enemies.

And then you’ll proceed to shoot them too, for good measure.

Divided into two teams, player must choose one of the different characters, each with a specific role, to take on the enemy base and destroy anyone who dares stand in your way. Here’s the catch, though: each round starts with both teams unable to engage in combat, so you’ll have to mount your base defenses instead. Each character has a different block available to him or her, so maybe you’ll use pressure plates, catapult blocks, electric traps, or whatever you and your teammates have at hand to build and plan. After the preparation phase is done, it is combat time! So grab your weapons, kill the opposition, and try not to die when you face the enemy traps.

Pro tip: Red beam is hot, blue is not. I just saved your life.

With its silly graphics, characters who own their existence to a pun or reference to another character, and a meticulous planning stage followed by sheer carnage, Block N’ Load will have you building murderous traps for hours on end.

In the conflictive streets of San Paro, a street war has been waging from quite some time. On one hand, criminals look to free themselves from the cumbersome law, and on the other, enforcers are fed up and will stop crime with whatever means necessary. Choose a side and let the bullets fly.

You know that policeman is gangsta because he is holding his gun sideways.

With a usual faction against faction gameplay, players are thrown into the fray with a specific objective to accomplish, such as capturing the enemy flag or having a target to kill or protect. What makes it unique, though, is the open world urban environment filled with vehicles and buildings, where you can find either cover or deadly weapons to arise victorious.

Good thing I’m good at killing enemies, because I’m a lousy graffiti artist.

Progression is measured by how much money you can mug from other players (yes, really) to buy more stuff, your standing with your fellow faction members and your own rank in the faction. So let’s rack up the body count, and teach these punks who’s the real owner of San Paro.

15). Heroes of the Storm

The newest of the big-shot MOBAs, Heroes of the Storm takes characters from every game of Blizzard (Warcraft, Overwatch, etcetera) and pits them in a battle for supremacy, where two teams will fiercely compete and try to eliminate each other.

“Pew pew” sounds are entirely optional, but don’t get mad if I can’t help myself.

We have the traditional elements of a MOBA: two teams with heroes that must destroy the other team’s base, while getting stopped/annoyed by creeps, turrets and enemy heroes. The thing is that the “team” part is more important than ever. Instead of leveling each hero individually, teams level up together. Also, you don’t have an in-game shop, so no stressing out because you don’t know what boots you need.

You can instead just rock on, like that fellow over there.

Last but not least, you do have a spin on the classical MOBA stages, as each one of the different maps has an additional objective that is not required to win, but will help your team a great deal. Maybe you have to collect gold in order to bribe a ghost pirate into shooting at the enemy’s structures. This is Blizzard taken a known concept and making it more accessible, as they also did with Hearthstone (more on that later). This doesn’t mean it doesn’t have any depth, as it can get quite complicated and competitive in ranked matches. However, with its easy to play and hard to master attitude, this should provide a good introduction to anyone who is itching for a fun MOBA to play.

You like MMORPGs, but have also a place in your heart for action-based games? Well, Tera is this and more, as you create a unique character in a world full of magic, ridiculously big weapons and huge monsters.

Say again, which head am I supposed to target?

Instead of  auto-targeting (as in letting the character’s AI target lock for you, and just limiting yourself to use the TAB key to change targets), Tera’s combat is fast paced and in real time, so no turns nor clicking on opponents. You’ll have to aim and attack, dodge and run, kiting through the battlefield and using a cross-hair to gauge if your attack will connect or not. Of course, the game also has the usual MMORPG features that will make you stop once in a while from your senseless slaughter, giving you the option of fulfilling quests, crafting new and shiny gear, or challenging other players to battle.

How do you kill such an enormous beast, you ask? With an even bigger weapon, of course.

With designs that scream “fantasy gear” but still retain an original and distinctive look, well crafted environments and an ever-growing community, Tera might just be the game for you. Be it solo or in a party, you’ll face giant monsters that will make you feel like a true warrior.

For anyone who remembers playing in the schoolyard with Pokémon cards, this will be a nostalgia trip. For everyone else: it’s Pokémon in card form: you are a Trainer of colorful and fantastic creatures that you use to battle other trainers (to the irritation of Animal Protection Organizations everywhere, I’m sure), looking to become the best Pokémon trainer ever. So what are we waiting for?

Come on, tell me you’re not excited with the sheer amount of Pokémons available.

Much like the physical version, you are able to build your deck with cards that represent Pokémon, items and power-ups that will give you an advantage during battle. Each Pokémon has a type (water, grass, earth, electric, etc.) with strengths and weaknesses, and many have evolutions, which are upgraded versions of the creatures that are played on top of the base Pokémon cards. Drawing heavily from the expansive list of Pokémon featured in the other games of the franchise, this in one title you cannot criticize for having few characters.

Mega Houndoom is an armored fire-breathing Rottweiler. Why aren’t you playing yet?

With all the more serious and dramatic entries of the list, it is quite enjoyable to find such kiddy charm in one of the old time favorites of Nintendo. Be it against the computer or another human player, with your PC or Android device, you will find battles to be fun and addictive, as you do your best to power up your little critter into the ultimate and most powerful being. So, you know what they say about collectible cards: gotta catch ‘em all.

12). The Lord of the Rings Online

Tolkien, this title gives you the opportunity to get involved in the events of the Lord of the Rings trilogy with a unique and custom character, while you aid the fellowship against the Dark Lord and his forces, by battling foes and doing some occasional farming.

Your knee will suffer, fiend! Then I will go and water my crops.

Enriched by the fantastic and complex world created by Tolkien, the game tries to capture some of its spirit by calling attention to some unique aspects of the experience. Hit points, for example, are called Morale, and apart from your usual health potions and food, it can be raised by resting, playing music or straight up shouting your battle-cry. Farming is encouraged, as well (you thought it was a dumb joke, didn’t you), as it forms part of the crafting system.

There’s a certain tranquility in visiting Hobbiton. Before, you know go on with my murder spree.

The game doesn’t actually hold the rights for all of Tolkien’s legendarium (that is to say, all the things that the author created in other works of fiction), so there are some generic monsters like harpy lookalikes and random orcs. However, prominent characters of the series do appear, such as Frodo and Aragorn, as they lead you into dungeons and areas where Sauron’s minions are causing trouble. And due to the fact that we are all nice guys, PvP isn’t your traditional “stab that other guy to death”. You actually create a little monster that can fight other players in the Ettenmoors (and nowhere else), so it’s kind of a Player versus player-created Monster deal. A little weird, but quite fun.

11). Hearthstone

A new take on the characters of the gaming juggernaut that is World of Warcraft, here comes this collectible card game to guarantee hours of simple yet addictive fun. So get ready for spellcasting mages and backstabbing rouges, with hundreds of different cards to choose from, and nine different heroes that will be your face on the battlefield. And although their names might be familiar to Warcraft players, as they include Uther Lightbringer, Valeera Sanguinar and Garrosh Hellscream, among others, they fall under more recognizable classes for the uninitiated, such as druid, hunter, mage, paladin, priest, rogue, shaman, warlock and warrior.

Is it wrong if I choose based on how good the gear looks?

The chosen hero impacts the battle in two ways: first, there are some cards that are only useable with one or two heroes. Second, every one of them has a different ability, such as summoning extra troops or damaging the other hero directly. As with other card games, you must use creature, spell and weapon cards to reduce your opponent’s life to 0, winning the match and giving you bragging rights. But Hearthstone is different in that it chooses speed and simplicity as the main focus: the cards have few stats, they must be played before a countdown timer expires, and you cannot interrupt the opponent’s turn.

Even when it’s painfully obvious you should try to make it stop.

Simple and quick, yet complex and engaging, Hearthstone is a very easy game to start playing immediately, but will require ability and patience to truly master.

10). Rift

Trapped in Telara, the place where different planes and dimensions intersect, are big nasty dragons that want to conquer and enslave civilization, as they are prone to do. Being either a pious Guardian or a scientific Defiant, your task is to kick the interdimensional pests from the Rift they came through. And you’ll do just that with pointy weapons, magic and awesome mounts. Buckle up, for it’s quite the ride.

You get to ride an amphibian shark. Enough said.

So you have your classic MMORPG with quests, loot, internal economics and improbable revealing armors. However, the one point where Rift will blow you away is the level of customization. You may choose one of five classes (Warrior, Cleric, Rogue, Mage or Primalist), but then you earn more and more “souls”, which work like subclasses, for every single one of them can be trained in its own progression tree. And even if you fined-tuned your damage dealer to your liking, but would want to be a healer just this once, you may save up to 20 different soul configurations, so you can change your “role” on the fly. So that’s a lot of options so you can just go and kill stuff.

Kill it with fire! Oh, wait…

Adding a fun and thematically appropriate housing system which lets you literally have your own little plane of existence and customize it to your liking, this is one MMORPG that, although doesn’t break off from the traditional gameplay with crazy ideas, manages to do extremely well in what it sets out to do: give you the freedom to really choose who you want to be.

9). Magic Duels

One of the most influential games of its genre, Magic the Gathering comes to digital form in this updated and free to play game. You take the role of a powerful summoner called a Planeswalker, using magic and creatures to beat the living crap out of your opponent. Being the digital counterpart to the daddy of modern trading card games, you’ll find all the core mechanics that have been copied and explored in all the others: it’s a turn based battle in which you must play creature, artifact and magic cards to defeat the enemy.

Die for me, my minions. Fulfill your duty. Muwahahaha.

To play the cards, you’ll need the mana provided by special cards called lands, which will give you a colored or neutral mana point. Red mana conjures red magic, green powers green, etcetera.

I call this deck the “That was part of my plan, you simpleton.” It’s not popular.

Given the quality and care that the developers have invested for decades in the physical game, you’ll find deep and rich strategies that will leave your opponent bloody and beaten.  The game updates by season, and each season brings a new campaign and, more importantly, new available cards and pre-built decks. Even if it can be a little more difficult for beginners to grasp all the special mechanics, it is nevertheless a fun and engaging game. Anyone want to battle me?

A new planet. So much potential, so much to discover. And apparently kill. When you play Wildstar, you will arrive at the planet Nexus, ready to discover everything it has to offer, while you back one of two opposing forces looking for the lost technology of an ancient race: the Dominion or the Exiles.

Which of them owns the monstrous laser sight behemoth? Because I’m with them.

With these enchanting setting, you will find the planet is not only big, but it is a persistent world that will reflect the impact players have on it. So you can actually go where no one else has gone before and claim the land as your own discovery. Additionally, there is the traditional quest-based storyline, item drops and plenty of customization to give you a true role-playing experience. Combat is fast and moves tend to project a “telegraph” of where they will land, giving you flexibility to launch your attacks however you want.

The hoverboard is great, but I’m freezing.

Arguably the most attractive feature is that the game world allows for different playing styles, and actually rewards you for choosing exploring rather than fighting. As you choose one of the 4 character paths that are loosely based on your gaming preference, such as achieving everything, socializing, pvp, etc., and they will level up independently and reward your actions. For example, if choosing the Explorer path, it’ll become more important to discover new places, rather than randomly killing wildlife.

So no matter what you enjoy doing, it’s probably developed in the beautiful world of Wildstar.

7). Team Fortress 2

Another battle between RED and BLU, this one is actually quite funny. Welcome to the critically acclaimed Team Fortress 2, where you join other players in a cartoonish team of mercenaries whose objective is to eliminate a team as cartoonish as themselves.

Tell me you don't imitate the Spy's French accent after every kill. No? Just me?

Although with a pretty simple and common premise, the gameplay is quite varied and entertaining due to the amount of different choices that impact the gameplay. There are 9 classes to choose from, each with its own abilities. Each class also has lots of different tools to choose from, so characters can become quite unique. Will you be a sniper that kills from afar and throws jars of piss (seriously, he can do that in-game) or an assassin who stabs people while invisible and impersonates your best of buddies before twisting the knife?

Or will you just run away like hell?

Funny visuals, fast paced action, creative stages and an inordinate amount of hats that do nothing useful but still everyone wants, this game has come a long way from being just a tiny mod. Play it if you haven’t, and I assure you it will make you laugh and enjoy yourself for quite a bit. I mean, even their trailers/movies are freaking hilarious, so go watch those if you’re not convinced.

6). League of Legends

You are a summoner, tasked with resolving political conflicts in a brutal yet controlled fashion: calling forth heroes to battle in a closed arena. And so you do. Maybe out of duty, maybe because it’s bloody fun.

Swoosh! Hahaha, look at that!... I mean, it is my duty to overcome, esteemed opponent.

So one of the most important MOBAs right now, League of Legends is played in one of 4 stages, controlling a champion that must team up with other players to destroy the opposing base and win the game. Between you and that objective, there are the usual mindless minions, powerful turrets and enemy champions. Featuring an astounding number of 126 Champions to choose from, a less punishing experience for people who die a lot (you don’t lose gold when it happens), and interesting abilities that emphasize having good aim rather than just indicating who to kill, it features a complex yet fun gameplay.

Don't forget chaotic. Chaotic attacks that frustrate those who don't see them coming.

With an approximate following of 67 million users playing each month, this is one behemoth that is a must to include in a list such as this one. Especially since it’s one of the chosen few to actually have developed into a full fledged e-sport, with yearly tournaments that attract millions of viewers. It started on 2011, and was won last year by a Korean team named SK Telecom T1. Apart from the bragging rights, they took home $1,000,000 USD. Yes, that’s not a typo. So, you know, practice makes perfect, and playing videogames can actually be a career. Take that, skeptics.

Here it is. The sequel to the original Defense of the Ancients, the little mod that could. That game spawned an entire genre of gaming, and DoTA 2 is the follow up by Valve. As before, you take control of a hero that must fight against others, in a game in which you can spend hours reading about the background story, or never notice it has one. Either way, this is the sequel to the original moba,  DoTA.

Now, where to find a hero to barbecue?

Again you must control a hero that’s part of a team and wants to wreck the opponent’s base. And of course, you still have the mindless minions, the turrets and the enemy heroes that stand in your way. So you’ll have to kill enemies, earn gold and upgrade your character to become an unstoppable force. Do remember that an amount of gold is lost if you die, so try not to, ok? With only one stage, you might think it can get repetitive quick, but in direct contrast to other games of the genre, all of DoTA 2 heroes are completely free. All 110 of them. So tell me when you get bored of each and every one of them.

Another one of the MOBA behemoths, this game has approximately 7.9 million players each month, so it’s fair to say it is quite popular. And just as League of Legends, this is one game that has transcended into the e-sports category, with its own high stakes tournament watched by millions of people. And when I say high stakes, I mean it: recognized by the Guiness World Records as the greatest prize money in a video game competition, last year’s tournament awarded $5,028,308 USD to NewBee, the Chinese team that won the competition.

I’m not saying you should start training to take them on or anything, though. Just choose your favorite hero, and give it a try. But before you go, tell me: had you noticed the logo of the game is the mini-map of the stage?

Imagine you’re a fan of Action Role-Playing games such as Diablo, and you’re fed up with the slow advancement of the genre. What to do? If you’re Grinding Gear Games, you get a group of like-minded individuals and develop your own, that’s what. Welcome to Wraeclast, once the thriving seat of an empire, now a cesspool full of exiles. You’re one of them, and you have a clear ambition. Survival.

Made the more difficult by extravagant tiny headed skeletons you find in your way.

Apart from the central hubs, every map is randomized, so you can go to the same place and never encounter the same layout. It also helps giving your party an isolated area to freely explore without worrying about stealing the kill of a random guy. You quest, you battle, you loot… everything you’ve come to expect from an action RPG. So it’s as simple as choosing your starter class from Duelist, Marauder, Ranger, Shadow, Templar, or Witch; sinking experience points to your attributes and face hordes of monsters that want to use your skin as a poncho.

You’d imagine arrows are not very effective against rock golems. You’d be wrong.

The game offers different leagues, with the hardcore one punishing death with permanent exile to the Standard league. So if your character isn’t hardcore enough and gets killed, it can only be used with those who don’t like punishments so severe. There is plenty to do, buy, loot and kill while you discover the dark corners of this world. But at the end, it’s always worth it.

3). Vindictus

The world of Vindictus is a dangerous place for such a well-lit environment. The Fomors, bad creatures who come in all shapes and sizes, are attacking the realm, and the goddess Morrigan can only depend on powerful heroes to defend and drive back the forces of darkness. So I’d say it’s a safe bet, but still, go kick some demonic butt.

And avoid being stepped on. Not the most comfortable experience.

This is one Action-oriented MMORPG if I ever saw one. The graphics are beautiful and the animations fluid, with a noticeable influence from anime and the like. Choosing from the ever-expanding roster of characters (with each of them being a different class altogether), you’ll find that the real time combat of Vindictus feels visceral and satisfying.

If you looked for “epic” in a dictionary… it would probably state its definition in a boring way, instead of how awesome is the above image.

With an array of customization options, marketplace for unwanted items, diverse cast of antagonists, huge boss battles and variety of stages and levels, Vindictus is a fun and fast combat experience for all who dare. Strategy counts, of course, but training, developing quick reflexes and staying on your toes will provide by far the best results. So go solo or party up, for battles and adventure await.

2). Ark Survival of the Fittest

Call me crazy, but this game reminds me of the Hunger Games movies. You start on a platform, in the middle of an island, with nothing to your name and a lot of angry enemies waiting to kill you if you don’t kill them first. There are supplies around to start off, but you’re an easy target if you don’t run to the wilderness. Whatever the case, you must craft and upgrade your tools and weapons in order to survive.

And use dinosaurs as artillery, because why not.

The game is played as a tribe war, meaning your team (tribe) must overcome the other. The tribes can be one man only, too, so you don’t have to team up if you don’t want. You have to use anything at your disposal to craft weapons, such as utilizing narcoberries to coat your arrows and turn them into tranquilizers. As you may have noticed, there are also dinosaurs you can tame and combat with, so it can get quite epic. And the stakes are raised higher when tournaments come around, as bosses spawn too.

I think my T-Rex just pooped a little.

An Ark spin-off, this game started as a modification that quickly gained following and support, resulting in a fast and amazing survival experience, where it’s not the strongest, but the most adaptable that will survive. You could say it’s “survival of the…” ok, I won’t say it, it’s a bad joke.

We’ve covered card games. We’ve covered strategy games. We’ve covered a mix of those genres, but I’ll bet you have never seen a game like Duelyst. First of all, because it’s very pretty. Look at those backgrounds, that’s some watercolor artistic level, right there. And second because it is just so carefully crafted and diverse that it offers a gaming experience that will make you wonder why the heck is this free.

Is someone taking money from my wallet or something? How is that background being paid?

Here’s the basics, but bear in mind it’s just the bare minimum. You control a hero, who is analogous to a King in chess: if you lose it, you are defeated. Playing on a tiled board, you must play cards to spawn creatures, allies and spells in order to defeat the enemy hero. Simple, huh? Well, each hero has a different set of abilities that might make it a true menace on the battlefield, and each card has a unique effect as well, so the combinations are almost endless.

Aside from the traditional PvP ranked matches, you also have a practice mode that lets you control both sides, so you can polish your killer combos. And if you’re more of the daring type, there is also the Gauntlet mode, where cards are randomly selected and you have to rely on your reflexes and quick thinking to prevail.

It’s still on beta, so the updates include around 4 new cards each month, before switching to the expansions. Try it out, as it is one of the best free games you can find nowadays.
