27 of the Best Coop Games to Play in 2015 and 2016

I myself am a big fan of playing with friends. It’s why I choose many of the games I download onto my computer nowadays. I especially like games that require us to work together in some way or another. Some of the best coop games are those that have an interesting challenge presented to the player or makes it seem like multiplayer is the only way to play.

27. The Crew

Developer: Reflections

Racing

Driver vs. Driver

Get behind the wheel in a real driving game.

It’s the open-world racing game you’ve been waiting for. You have five sections of the U.S, all open-world, that you can drive around in. There are also skill challenges, which will be saved for your friends to see and attempt to beat.

This game is going to be challenging to everyone who will be looking to be the best, with new bests possibly showing up every hour. This is a game where you can live out your personal Fast and Furious fantasy with your friends.  All of you can drive for what will feel like forever behind the wheel of a large variety of vehicle options.

For those of you who like to go fast

Fans of games like Need for Speed and other racing games will now get more freedom to race to ends of the earth and wherever yourr heart desires.  There hasn’t been an open-world racing game quite like this one to date.  If you are the competitive type when it comes to racing, this is a game for you.

The Crew

26. Saint’s Row 3

Developer: Volition

Action-adventure

Human vs. Human

You got what it takes to be a Saint, punk?

If you don’t have any idea why this game made the list, then you either live under a rock or this game is not for you. Saints Row 3 takes us to the city of Steelport, where your gang, the Third-Street Saints, have become celebrity-status. Your gang is much more into endorsements and signing autographs than actually hurting people, but don't worry. The introduction of vicious gangs, and a para-military locking down your city, will help encourage you all to go back to your roots.

The game has all the open-world goodness that GTA has, but then add some crudeness to the equation and a lot of explosions.  This is the game to get the guys and gals with a terrible sense of humor over to your home and go on a merry mayhem through the streets of the city. If that doesn’t make you want to buy Saints Row 3, then I might add that the game has a horde mode that combines what you would expect from a horde mode and the crude humor you’d expect from a Saints Row game.

Action, explosions, and more craziness than you could possible ever imagine.

Think of this like a GTA game, but you can be as odd-balled as you want.

Saint Row's 3

25. Civilization V

Developer: Firaxis

Turn-based Strategy

Human vs. Human

Everyone is watching.

The Civilization series puts you in control of a nation, under a famous world leader, and tasks you with bringing your civilization from a nomadic tribe to a nation with global influence. This can be achieved through being the most cultured, conquering everyone, winning a UN election or being the first into space. This coop game is for those with the patience for long games and a bit of strategic smarts.

Molding history in your own image can be quite intriguing, and the several expansions to the series make it so you’ll have plenty of options to play around with. Once you and your friends learn the mechanics of the game, you'll be able to have some memorable games filled with diplomacy, war, and watching your nations expand. There are many notable people in history that you can take control of trying to create the civilization you always wanted, or at least one that is better than your friends.

All of history at your fingertips

This is the game you and your friends should play if any of you enjoy long strategy games like Risk.

 Civilization

24. Garry’s Mod

Developer: Valve

Non-linear, Sandbox, Co-Op, Physics game

Human vs. Human

Calling all big-idea-ed builders.

Garry's Mod is a game where your imagination can run wild. You and your friends can build things, destroy things, set up any sort of scenario you can think of, or just do plain and simple tomfoolery. This is the best coop game for those who enjoy using your imagination. You and your friends will be given tools to build, and several to destroy, whatever it is you want.

There are a load of mods, anything from character skins to new maps to vehicles. There are also several game modes within this game that are really popular, spawning tons of videos on Youtube. This is a fun game for you and your friends to mess around and be silly in, no matter how you do it.

Let your wacky imagination run rampant.

What makes this one of the best coop games is that you are free to do so much within this game and have a lot of fun with all your friends. It’s the type of game that people from any gaming background can enjoy.

Garry's Mod

23. Portal 2

Developer: Valve

Puzzle Platformer

Human vs. Machine

Science has given you a loophole.

Portal 2 is a puzzle game that can be completed through the application of physics. This may sound pretty challenging, and you'd be right, but you will have a lot of fun running trial solutions to every room's puzzle. This coop game stands out from the others because the player has to think a lot more than in the others.

Together, you and your friend must solve puzzles using a variety of mechanics based on physics. This is a great coop game because it’s a lot of fun trial and error as the two of you try to figure out how the puzzle works. The gameplay is very unique and you’ll find yourself conversing with your friend over the puzzle the two of you are going to get this done.

What's puzzling is that you may not have played this yet.

This game encourages cooperation and running continuous trials. This stands out from other coop games in how the game requires you and your player 2 to solve problems. The dialogue is also incredibly quirky, making you want to keep playing.  It’s a very engaging game, so you’re sure to find a friend to play it with you.

Portal 2

22. Team Fortress 2

Developer: Valve

FPS

Human vs. Human

Free to play, and lots of fun for all.

Team Fortress 2 is one of the funniest coop games ever.  Broken up into Red Team and Blue Team, you and your team will have a variety of different game modes to play. These involve Team DeathMatch, Capture the Flag, Escort the Bomb, and several others. Part of the fun lies in the variety of classes that you can choose from, each of them looks and acts hilarious.

There are certain combinations of classes, like a medic and a heavy that can really help a team out. The game demands that everyone works together or else, you will surely lose. Not to mention there is a big thing for hats in this game, with there being seemingly endless numbers of hats to collect. The weapons you can get for your characters are very unique and it’s often the odd looking ones that do the most damage.

Team Deathmatch has never been so fun.

It's an engaging game, from the bright colors to the original character designs, and you'll find yourself wanting to play this game with your friends for hours on end.

Team Fortress 2

21. Left 4 Dead 2

Developer: Valve

Srvival Horror FPS

Human vs. Zombie

For a game about the dead, it's sure got life in it.

What’s there not to like about Left 4 Dead 2? You and up to three friends must fight through a campaign, which is composed of five maps filled with zombies and “special infected” that want nothing more to kill you. There will be weapons, medical supplies, explosives, and now you will have access to melee weapons.

There are also new ranged weapons and boosts, as well as four new survivors and new maps to choose from. You can play against other players across a whole campaign, or five maps, trying to get higher scores. You’ll need to stick together for the best chance at surviving through each map. It’s tons of fun on multiplayer, either breaking up a great team by ambushing them as special infected or either frantically scrambling to help out your team member when you’re on the receiving end of the ambush.

Bring on the Apocalypse baby!!

You and your team better be on high-alert, because any moment could mean your team will be swarmed with a horde of zombies. This game just gives off an adrenaline rush and will have you freaking out and fighting for your life many times. The scenery also contributes to the somber mood of the game. You won’t find a better coop game that involves zombies.

Left 4 Dead 2

20. Grand Theft Auto V

Developer: RockStar

Action-adventure

Human vs. Human

You got to work hard to live easy.

The Grand Theft Auto series always promises a good time.  Set in sunny Los Santos, the single-player campaign has you cycling through three different characters that team up to live the good life.  As you play through the game, you'll find your inspiration in making them succeed in all the action-packed missions, and also the fact that you hope you'll be able to get away from irritating minor characters.

In multiplayer, you will need to get your friends together to have a good time. Either work together to complete heists or take each other on in dozens of mini-games. Or maybe you all just want to drive around in a tank and blow everyone up. There is plenty to do in GTA V when you and your friends get together. There are also lots of mini-games you and your friends can play, ranging from racing cars or planes to king-of-the-hill type matches.

Kicking back with some good friends.

Be on the look-out as you and your friends play online, or else you may be surprised by other players attacking you.

Grand Theft Auto V

19. Borderlands 2

Developer: Gearbox

FPS, Action, Role-Playing

Vault Hunter vs. World

More fun than tea at Tiny Tina's, and less deadly.

Continuing off where Borderlands left off, and add several years on top of that, Borderlands 2 gives you four new vault hunters, a new whole storyline and a new Pandora to explore, and not to mention the bazillion more types of guns.  This time, a man named Handsome Jack, apparent owner of Atlas Corporation, is looking to unlock the powers of the Vault and destroy the rebels resisting him.

As fun as it is to play through the campaign yourself, it’s a lot more fun to have more than one gun-blazing vault hunter trying to stop Handsome Jack. Combine your characters to pull off some very exciting combinations. It’s also lot of fun to have one of your characters belittle another for having to help their sorry butt up after being knocked down.

Welcome back to Pandora, Kiddo

Borderlands 2 coop gives you and your teammate a great experience with loads of guns, each one different than the rest, and fun skill trees to make each of you your own unique character. And when the two of you are done fighting side-by-side, you can duke it out in an arena or in a duel.

Borderlands 2

18. Star Wars: Battlefront

Developer: Dice

Action, shooter

Human vs. Human

May the force be with us all.

It looks like we’re going back to a galaxy far, far away. This next era of Star Wars Battlefront will having us going to memorable landscapes and planetary atmosphere to engage in glorious firefights. This coming news must be exciting for fans of the Star Wars-verse.

So far, the gameplay shows that players will be able to play as either the Rebellion or the Empire. You’ll be able to fight on foot or one of the iconic vehicles, including snow speeders and AT-AT walkers. And, of course, the chance will come during the fight when you will be able to pick up a lightsaber and play as one of the iconic characters in the Star Wars films.

The popular series is back, and in a really big way.

You will be able to team up with your friend to fight the enemy through campaigns and in short skirmishes. I imagine that, since you were able to do so in the previous games, will be able to play as the Republic and Confederacy factions. The gameplay looks so wonderful, from the updated graphics to the new motions that troops do when shot, and what little that has bene revealed shows promise for an incredibly engrossing game.

Star Wars: Battlefront

17. PayDay 2

Developer:  OverKill

FPS, Tactical Shooter, Stealth

Crime, Heist, Armed Robbery

Time to make a whole lot of money.

Payday 2 is an FPS game centered on committing a variety of heists. You can rob money from banks, drugs from gangsters, and even famous paintings in order to rob a high-ranking political official. To succeed in this game, communication and a tactical brain are absolutely necessary.

Whichever heist you commit, it’s going to take time for you and your team to get the job done.  This game has four class trees, each one catering to a different playstyle, where everyone can choose from one or more classes to match their playstyle. It would be highly recommended for at least one person to have an ammo bag, and one person to have a medical bag present, to help get the job done.

Get rich or die in a firefight of glory.

This is perhaps of the best games in its genre because it allows you to live out your wild robbery fantasy. Anyone who loved heists movies or wants a different type of FPS game will definitely enjoy this game.  With the new Crimewave DLC having come out not too long, the amount of mayhem you can do will only become more exciting.

PayDay 2

16. Town of Salem

Developer: BlankMediaGames

Party, Strategy

Player vs Player

The only socially acceptable time to point fingers.

This game stands out from the others on this list because it is more commonly found on browser and social media sites. Despite the fact that this game is centered on being the last one standing, there is a lot of potential in working together during the early stages.  Case in point, all the proof you need is the historical event this game is based upon.

The Salem Witch Trials were all about people ganging up on an individual. This sort of “strategy” will also be successful in Town of Salem. All that needs to be done is to get together with your friends, sell out all other players, then the real challenge will begin.

Hope you're a silvertongued-type of person.

Anyone who enjoys a short, quirky game will really enjoy playing this game. This mystery game will keep everyone guessing, especially if you have friends who enjoy messing with you. It will probably be one of the best social media games you can ever play, and yes, I do mean it’s better than Candy Crush.

Town of Salem

15. Total War: Attila

Developer: Total War

Turn-based Strategy

Human vs Human

Dark days ahead for the civilized world.

The latest game in the Total War Franchise focuses on the end of the Roman Empire and the rise of many “barbarian” factions, one of them being the Huns and their leader, from which the game gets its title.  While the single-player campaign promises to be loads of fun, the updated siege battles for multiplayer are probably the most intriguing feature.

What went wrong with the siege battles in Rome: Total War 2 was that it was hardly any different from the siege battles in Shogun: Total War.  Attila fixes this by allowing players to build barricades, use the environment to serve them, whether they defending or attacking the city, and gives the game mode a more cinematic feel overall.  To succeed in this game with your friends, it would help to have knowledge of playing RTS games and commanding armies beforehand. This is the not the type of game to cut your teeth on.

Now is the age of war and destruction.

Fans of the Total War Franchise and other games where they are in command of legions of troops will find this game playable for hours on end. The improvements in the multiplayer feature of this game definitely set Total War: Attila apart from its predecessors. If you need to see gameplay before making your choice, there are loads of Youtubers who have videos up of siege battles.

Total War: Attila

14. Contagion

Developer: Monochrome

FPS, survival horror

Human vs. Zombie

You'll need to use your brain, or else the zombies get it.

Contagion takes a different approach from other zombie games by having you and your team completing a number of tasks while also trying to fend off the undead horde. This game offers quite a challenge that will keep all the players on their toes and always checking over the shoulders as they try to escape the large building they find themselves trapped in.

The secret to doing this well in this game is communication and assigning roles. Zombies can show up anywhere, so someone will need to keep an eye out while other members pull all the levers and find everything needed to get out. If there is confusion to who’s doing what, the mission can turn very ugly very quickly.

You'll need to use all the tools avliable to you to make it through this game.

Fans of the survival and zombie genre should get a real kick out of the game.  Contagion is worth a play because it requires you to think and plan out what you’re doing more so than other zombie games.

Contagion

13. Dying Light

Developer: Techland

Action, role-playing, survival horror

Human vs. Zombie

if you thought zombies during the day was bad...

Dying Light is a game very similar to Dead Island, just in a more urban setting. That setting alone gives the game a lot more intrigue in terms of types of zombies players will deal with, places that players can get into and a storyline very different from one that would be taking place on an island resort.

The key to this game is to stay aware and work as a team to get each quest given to you done.  During the day, you don’t need to be super aware of your surroundings, but there are zombies during the evening who are super-fast and can leap at you from what seems like nowhere. Working as a team to search an area quickly could mean one can find a motherlode and share it with the entire team, if they’re super nice.

Hopefully the dawn comes real soon.

Fans of zombie survival games will find this game right up their alley. This game, although borrowing from a lot of common zombie game mechanics, brings a lot of unique features to help it stand on its own.  If you enjoy being chased by fast zombies in the nighttime where you have no idea where you’re going, I’d recommend you try this game.

Dying Light

12. Just Cause 3

Developer: Avalanche Studios

Action-adventure

Human vs. Human

Because why not?

If you are familiar with any Just Cause game, you know why you should be pumped for this. If not, let me give you a pitch on this. You are basically an action hero free to do what you want, including the popular use of a grappling hook to connect two objects (cars, buildings, people) to each other.

So how can this be cooperative you ask? Well you can work with you friends to have lots of fun. That would just mean you guys work together to complete missions together. All it takes is a little communication to make sure you all get in on the same game.  And knowing how exciting Just Cause, there will be a load of new features to mess around with.

A whole world just waiting for you to drop on in.

Fans to the Just Cause series and gamers who want to just mess around will really enjoy this game. This game will certainly throw in more fun features, and hopefully we keep the grappling hook.

Just Cause 3

11. Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Siege

Developer: Ubisoft

FPS, Tactical Shooter

Anti-Terrorist vs. Terrorist.

Fighting evil, one building at a time.

If you have not seen the trailer for this game, stop reading this article and go check it out before coming back here.  This new Tom Clancy game seems to be one team assaulting a building while another team defends it. There will probably be extra things involved, like a bomb or hostages, to make the gameplay more diverse and tense.

Coordinating your movements with the rest of your team will often bring you victory.  Whether you’re attacking or defending, it will help your team if it’s known what’s going on throughout the battle. If you and your team can outmaneuver the enemy team, they’ll be unable to and you’ll win.

You're going to need some trustworthy people with you for this one.

Fans of Tom Clancy and tactical shooters will really enjoy this game. Rainbow Six Siege seems to be downsizing the battlefield while also amplifying the amount of action going on.  This seems like it’ll be something no other shooter has done before.

Rainbow Six Siege

10. Gigantic

Developer: Motiga

Third-Person Shooter

Champion vs. Champion

MOBA meets Godzill vs. Mothra.

Though it hasn’t been released yet, Gigantic looks like an incredible game.  You and your teammates will be capturing places on the battlefield and stealing power from your opponents in order to strengthen the giant monster each team has. The game seems to revolve around you killing the enemy’s giant beast, which should prove to be quite a challenge.

It seems the strategy here is to pay attention to the movements of your teammates and enemies. Every zone, whether captured or lost, could mean the difference in this match. Also, try to fight together and not get picked off by your lonesome, which will only strengthen the enemy.

On second though, perhaps this wasn't so smart.

Gigantic looks like a fun game for MOBA and RTS players. What makes this game seem different from other games is the addition of a giant monster that the entire team must care for and protect.  If this game interests you, it couldn’t hurt to swing by the website and stay up-to-date on all the news.

Gigantic

9. Battleborn

Developer: Gearbox

FPS, multiplayer, online, battle, arena

Hero vs. Villain

There's no quota on heroes when the world is in danger.

From the producers of Borderlands comes a game taking place in a whole new universe. Players will get to play as heroes hailing from several different factions and seeking to defend what producers say is the last habitable planet. From footage that’s been shown so far, this game looks incredible.

Like Borderlands, Battleborn seems to have a load of different heroes, each one a different playstyle. To succeed as a team, everyone will need to take skills from their respective trees to complement each other. Any player who doesn’t have a well-structured character will surely be a Achilles’ heel to the rest of the team.

Another wonderful thing about Gearboxx games; the skill trees.

It’s safe to say that fans of Gearbox will get a kick out of this new game. The amount of heroes that you will be able to play as, and in a campaign-based game, in this game has surely never been done before. Battleborn will combine both elements already seen as well as new mechanics that will surely make this a need-to-have game.

Battleborn

8. Human Element

Developer: Robotoki

FPS, Role-playing

Human vs. Zombie

We're only human, or are we?

Often in zombie survival games, you find you and your team as trying to escape from the zombie hordes. Human Element will be taking a different approach, instead requiring that you reclaim your planet back in the name of the living. Work with your team to scavenge supplies, as well as building a fortress to hold back zombies and possibly enemy scavengers.

Since this is a scavenging game, assigning roles will certainly help you and your teammates stay alive.  Once you have some sort of structure built up, it would be best to keep some people back to stay on look-out for enemies.  You wouldn’t want to spend all your time setting up a wonderful fort only to lose it while you weren’t careful.

Better hope you're quicker.

Those who enjoy games like Don’t Starve and Minecraft will certainly enjoy this game.  The fact that not many zombie games focus on you staying put and building stuff will certainly make this game stand out from the others.

Human Element

7. Ark: Survival Evolved

Developer: Studio Wildcard

Action-adventure, survival

Human vs. Dinosaur

This must have been before they build the park.

These past few years have seen a number of dinosaur-themed video games. Ark makes an attempt to stand out by having you and any possible teammates of yours trying to survive by scavenging supplies and building tools and buildings.  It has those things, plus the possibility of aliens and the ability to allow you to ride dinosaurs.

To survive in this more primitive Jurassic Park, you will need to work with your team. Whether it’s getting supplies, building tools and buildings, or trying to fight off the dinosaurs, it is up to you and team to communicate to survive all the danger out there.  If you doubt how dangerous it can be in this game, look at videos on the game from Youtubers like Roosterteeth and H2ODelirious and then come back to me.

Looks like someone found thier next meal.

Fans of dinosaurs and building things in games will surely be intrigued by this game.  Though this game may look simple at first glance, there appears to be a lot of secrets and fun to the player who will be willing to put in a few hours to this game.

Ark: Survival Evolved

6. Killing Floor 2

Developer: Tripwire

FPS

Human vs. Monster

You'll need to be as bloodthirsty as the monsters you're fighting.

Killing Floor 2 looks like Nazi Zombies had a baby with Borderlands or some sort of crazy slasher. Working together with others, you will have to survive against waves of what one of the most interesting line-ups of creatures. In between rounds, you and your team will need to buy new weapons, stock up on ammo, and hope you’ll be able to survive the next one.

To survive in this game to the very end, it would be recommended that you all stay together. The type of creatures you’ll be facing will be anywhere from common ghouls to brutish unions of flesh and metal. Take too much damage and you’ll be downed, and then you’ll wish you had a teammate nearby.

Bet you've never heard of a ghost zombie before.

Fans of games where you face wave after wave of enemies alongside a few good friends will enjoy this game greatly.  What makes this game stand out from others is that Killing Floor 2 features a beefy boss-like creature at the very end should you and your team makes it past every other wave. It is a most fulfilling way to end a hard-fought match filled with bullets, blood and close-calls.

Killing Floor 2

5. Evolve

Developer: Turtle Rock

FPS

Human vs. Monster

Who's up for an exhilirating hunt?

Evolve is a very interesting game because it now gives you the chance to invite over your worst enemy to play video games with you and your friends. Four hunters are pit against a menacing beast, which can grow bigger, stronger and faster over time.  Commanding that beast will be a human player, as are the people going after it.

For the hunters, the best advice would be to work as a team. Call out if you see the beast lurking in the background or if you are downed by the beast.  There are a number of classes that each hunter will be able to play as, which can leveled up and gain new weapons and characters, so pick the one that most matches your preferred playstyle.

Out there, everything will kill you.

Fans of survival games and those interested in trying out this new multiplayer premise should definitely play this game.  This game has such an interesting premise that it will certainly be a play that people will want to play for years to come. It would also make a very interesting game to center events and tournaments around.

Evolve

4. Block-N-Load

Developer: Jagex

Action, Strategy, Sandbox, FPS

Champion vs. Champion

Be there and be square.

If Minecraft was all about destroying your enemy, then Block-N-Load would be it. You and your team must choose from several classes and then the game begins. You’ll have a short time to get your fortress ready by building up defenses, and when it runs out, it’s time to destroy.

The key to winning this game is to coordinating effort. There is more than one way to completing the objective, which is to destroy the core of the other team.  Using the classes to their full extent, and also communication between the entire team, will bring you and your team victory.

If you're not busy as bees, you're doing it wrong.

Fans of light-hearted shooters, like Team Fortress 2, will really enjoy this game. The character models and blocky maps will definitely help this game stand out from other games involving destroying bases and classes.

Block-N-Load

3. Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2

Developer: Popcap

Tower Defense

Plant vs. Zombie

Now this is flower power.

Evolving from a simple 2D tower defense to a 3D tower defense with players controlling mobile defenders, the first Garden Warfare certainly was a fun alternative to the more serious game of which this one is based off of. Players will be defending a central point, using the weapons of their class and building their terran turrets to fight off the variety of zombies.

Players will need to work together to make sure all points are covered from the coming horde. Placing turrets in tight spots where the zombies must come through, called chokeholds, and making sure to take down the tougher foes first will help the team win the day. Be on the loo-out for any turrets which may be taken down, as well for teammates and trouble, and you should have no problem at all.

The addition of new playable characters will certainly make this experience more fruit-full.

Fans of the Plants vs. Zombies series and light-hearted games will want to play this game. This game promises to bring more zombies, more classes, and more to wage some exciting garden warfare.

Plants vs. Zombies: GW2

2. Fortnite

Developer: Epic Games

Survival Sandbox

Human vs. Monster

Hope you're not scared of the dark.

What’s cooler than building to survive zombie hordes?  Building defenses to survive monsters coming from something called “The Storm”. No clue what sort of beasts you’ll be going up against, but it’s assumed to be bad enough to keep you busy every day and night.

It would be assumed, since building is a key feature in this game, that maintenance and upkeep is important to succeeding in this game. There may be classes, some better at other roles than others. As the case with games involving classes, choose the one that fits your playstyle and do your best to keep the group together.

When building to survive, it doesn't hurt to double-check your blueprints.

Fans of survival games will certainly find this game quite intriguing. The promise of there being no foreseeable end to these creatures could promise that people will be able to jump in and out of a match could mean that Fortnite will be quite a treat of a game.

Fortnite

1. For Honor

Developer: Ubisoft

 Hack-and-Slash

Knight vs. Viking vs. Samurai

The greatest warriors of history get together to prove who is deadliest.

For Honor will be quite a game.  Players will take control of either a knight, a samurai or a viking, depends on the faction you choose, and lead a force of AI soldiers to capture points.  The graphics look amazing, and also the fact that players will be able to engage in one-on-one duels. To win, players will need to work together to complete the overall objective. This could mean leading the AI forces to capture the points and win the game or it could mean stopping the human enemies. There is a difference between how each of the playable characters fight, so it may take more than one human player to take down an enemy.

Fortune will favor the headstrong.

Those who enjoyed games like Chivalry: Medieval Warfare or War of The Roses will find this game very similar.  What makes For Honor stand out from other games is the look to the game, the playable men, and fact that AI troops will be taking over for a lot of the human teammates that players of similar games would be used to.
