Can you fly around New York as Iron Man?

10. No, it is not open world

Marvel’s Avengers is not open world. Instead, it has several maps located in different regions of the world. You have regions such as the Future Wasteland, Wakanda, Utah Badlands, Eastern Seaboard etc.

Each of these locations contains missions called War Zones. Selecting them can lead you to a large map, or a smaller one.

9. You can only roam around in Outposts

Roaming without any combat can only be done in Outposts. Outposts are where the Avengers can walk around and purchase gear and interact with NPC’s. Such outposts available are Birnin Zana, the Golden City of Wakanda. The Ant Hill, a safe haven for Inhumans lead by Hank Pym. Shield Substation Zero, the Shield HQ lead by Mariah Hill. Lastly, the Chimera, which is the mobile HQ for the Avengers.

8. Mission maps differ in sizes

As stated before, mission pas are either large or small. That depends on the mission you choose. If you were to choose a Threat Sector mission, you will be transported to a wide-open area where you can roam around until you finish the mission.

Smaller mission maps are only in Drop Zones, and are usually located in indoor spaces that only lead you to one area to finish the mission.

7. Large mission maps offer optional tasks

In large mission maps, you will have optional tasks to do. This can range from defeating Priority Targets, finding secret Shield Cache’s, saving captive Inhumans etc. Remember that these are optional, and are by no means required to finish the mission, but you will complete Daily Challenges and acquire gear to do so, so it’s recommended to complete them.

6. Small mission maps are straightforward

In smaller mission maps, you are placed in the beginning of the level with only one way to go: forward. These missions are meant to be done quickly and offer quick rewards for those who want to enjoy a short session in Marvel’s Avengers.

5. Patrol Mode currently in development

Crystal Dynamics understands that players want to roam around the large maps without having to worry about completing any missions. Currently, you can only roam the large maps by selecting Threat Sector missions.

Crystal Dynamics has announced that they are developing a Patrol Mode, a feature that allows players to roam around without any objectives. It’s currently still in development alongside other content, so expect it sometime in the future.

4. You can free roam in the large maps

As stated before, free roaming can only happen in large maps. Marvel’s Avengers was not made with an open-world design in mind. This was stated way before the release of the game. While it may be disappointing, the story of Marvel’s Avengers with an open-world does not fit, as the Avengers are branded fugitives and outlaws, so free roaming around New York wouldn’t make sense.

3. No plans to make an open world

While it was stated that Marvel’s Avengers would not be open-world before, fans continue to ask and hope that Crystal Dynamics would change their minds and maybe patch in the open-world feature. Unfortunately, the best the developers can do is put a Patrol Mode in the game, which allows players to free roam the larger maps without objectives.

2. Speaking of Outposts, Avengers Tower is not one of them

The iconic Avengers Tower is memorable in both the movies and the comics. While the Avengers Tower was indeed seen in the game, it quickly became the HQ for A.I.M instead after the disaster of A-Day.

Fans have asked the developers if one day in the future, the Avengers can retake the Tower for themselves and make it their permanent base of operations. No word on whether that might happen, but one can always hope.

1. Game is still being supported, so larger maps may be in development alongside additional content

After its launch in September 2020, Avengers is still going strong. Although the updates are very slow compared to other games, Crystal Dynamics continues to support the game and be positive about the future of the Avengers.

With the expansion War for Wakanda adding new larger maps, players hope that Crystal Dynamics can release another expansion that adds more characters, more enemies, more villains, but more importantly, more maps.
