10. Victor Vran

Victor Vran is an action RPG developed by indie game studio Haemimont Games. The combat combines science and magic, featuring weapons like rifles with magical attributes such as lightning to electrocute enemies. The player assumes control of Victor Vran, a demon hunter who arrives in the fantasy city of Zangoravia to help the inhabitants fight off a demon infestation.

The more the number of enemies, the more the loot.

The combat in Victor Vran is fast action based and features dodge and jump mechanics which can be used in combat. Players will explore dungeons and must solve puzzles and battle monsters to find hidden treasure chests and rare items.

9. Shadowrun : Hong Kong

Shadowrun : Hong Kong is a turn-based tactical RPG set in a cyberpunk world. The game features isometric graphics with 3d character models and includes a single player campaign of at least 15+ hours. Shadowrun: Hong Kong also features a level editor that lets players create and share their own shadowrun campaigns.

The combat is turn based, players will control the action of all the characters in their team which ends the turn, after which the enemy makes their move. Various character actions like moving , attacking, reloading, using items etc., uses action point (AP) which defines how many moves the character can make. A normal character has 2 AP.

Think carefully before acting. One wrong move and your whole team gets wiped out.

The game requires tactical strategy similar to games like XCOM and heroes of might and magic. If you like tactical strategy games, Shadowrun : Hong Kong won’t disappoint.

8. Ark : Survival Evolved

Ark: Survival Evolved is an action adventure survival game developed by Studio Wildcard, Instinct Games, Effecto Studios and Virtual Basement. In this game, the main objective is to survive, being stranded on a remote island filled with deadly dinosaurs , natural hazards and other hostile human players.

The Island can be explored by foot or by riding a tamed dinosaur. Players use firearms and improvised weapons like spears, slingshots etc., to attack as well as defend against various hostile creatures. Weapons can be customized by scavenging the environment for various materials and items for crafting.

 The world map, known as the ARK is approximately 48sq. km in size. The main focus of the game is survival. To survive you have to build a base with fire, scavenge materials for creating weapons and items, tame dinosaurs and defend your base from hostile creatures like dinosaurs and other human players. The game features over 60 different types of dinosaurs and you can tame each and every one of them.

7. Lightning Returns : Final Fantasy XIII

Lightning Returns : Final Fantasy XIII is an action RPG developed by Square Enix. The game is a direct sequel to Final Fantasy XIII-2 and concludes the storyline of Final Fantasy XIII. The gameplay features an action-oriented turn based battle system, customizable character outfits, a nice intriguing storyline and a fantastic open world to explore.

Gorgeous graphics and superb action gameplay.

Players will take control of Lightning, the main protagonist, whose main quest is to save the people of a dying world before the world ends.  The game allows players to freely traverse an open world, explore towns and accept main and side quests from various npc’s.

You don’t scare me, fiend.

The main storyline can be completed in about 35 hours and be extended to 50+ hours with the completion of both main and side quests. Fans of the Final Fantasy series should not miss out on this one.

6. Pillars of Eternity

Pillars of Eternity is an RPG developed by Obsidian Entertainment. The game is the spiritual successor of old school RPG games like Baldur’s Gate and Icewind Dale & features the same old-school graphics, 2d isometric viewpoint and tactical gameplay.

The main character is created by the player. A total of 11 different classes are available including- Fighter, Barbarian, Paladin, Ranger, Wizard, Druid, Monk, Priest, Rouge, Chanter and Cipher. Each class has its own combat skills and abilities. The main character can party with up to 5 other companions to adventure in the world.

The game can take up to 60+ hours to complete with just the main quests. For completionists the total time may go up to 100+ hours. Fans of the classic Baldur’s Gate and Planescape: Torment games will love this one.

5. Divinity Original Sin : Enhanced Edition

Divinity Original Sin is a single and co-op multiplayer fantasy RPG developed by Larian Studios. The multiplayer mode feature both split –screen and online multiplayer gameplay. The game blends in deep character, weapon customization and humor with dynamic turn-based combat. One of the remarkable features in this game is its “classless hero system ”where players are free to create their heroes without worrying about any special class benefits, because all the character stats can be adjusted according to the player’s desire.

The environments look vivid and graphics are very good.

The combat system is turn based and features reactive environments. For example: If enemies are in a pool of water, electricity infused attacks are stronger while fire infused attacks are weaker.

The game takes about 60+ hours for completion of main storyline and 80+ hours for completion of both main and side-story quests. The co-op system is some of the best and offers a fun experience when you play it with a buddy.

4. Undertale

Undertale is an indie RPG game developed by Toby Fox. The game uses extremely old school graphics and gameplay. The game world is seen from a top down 2d perspective. Players assume control of a human child who has fallen underground into a region underneath the surface of the Earth, separated by a magical barrier.

The humor is extremely good and well put.

The main quest in the game is to return the human child to the surface, in the process the player encounters various monsters and is faced with the decision to either kill them or befriend them. The choices made by the player affects the outcome          of the game with the dialogue and story changing based on the decisions made.

When you run away instead of fighting.

The game is humorous and features an intriguing storyline. If you enjoyed old school RPG games like Earthbound and Mario, be sure to check this one out.

3. Dark Souls 2: Scholar of The First Sin

Dark Souls II is an action RPG from From Software and is the third installment in the dark souls series, however there is no direct connection with the storyline of the first Dark Souls game. Dark Souls II uses the same multiplayer elements as its predecessor featuring Player vs Environment (PvE) and Player vs Player (PvP) gameplay modes.

The bigger the enemy, the better the challenge.

Dark Souls 2: Scholar of The First Sin is an updated version of the original Dark Souls II game and includes all 3 DLCs - Crown of the Sunken King, Crown of the Iron King and Crown of the Ivory King.

Dark Souls : Scholar of The First Sin features remastered visuals with advanced lightning effects and runs in 1080p resolution at 60FPS. The PC version of the game runs on DirectX 11 instead of DirectX 9.

Gather your strength, you have a dragon to kill.

Dark Souls II features similar gameplay mechanics as its predecessor and is known for its unforgivingly difficult gameplay with iconic bosses which are extremely hard to beat on the first try. If you have played and liked the other two souls games, then you will definitely love Dark Souls II.

2. Fallout 4

Fallout 4 is an action RPG developed by Bethesda Game Studios. It is set in a post- apocalyptic future in the year 2287. 210 years after the nuclear warfare you emerge from an underground bunker known as vault 111 and are given certain objectives to complete.

The  post apocalyptic world is fun to explore and scavenge.

Gameplay is similar to that of other fallout titles. The player completes various quests and objectives to acquire experience points which level up their character. The gameplay is extremely non- linear allowing the player to explore the vast open world freely. Players also have the ability to construct buildings and craft items and create new settlements.

Even with a machine gun you shouldn’t mess with that creature.

The post apocalyptic setting, vast open-world and intriguing storyline is enough for a player to easily invest 80+ hours in game in order to complete all the main and side story quests.

1. The Witcher 3 : Wild Hunt

The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt is a fantasy open world RPG and is the sequel to the highly acclaimed Witcher 2 : The assassins of kings. The story in the Witcher games are based on a series of fantasy novels by Andrzej Sapkowski.

In the game players assume control of Geralt of Rivia, the protagonist who sets out on a long journey through the Northern Kingdoms. Geralt is a monster hunter known as a Witcher and uses various swordplay techniques and magic to fight enemies in his quests.

The Witcher 3 : Wild Hunt has a very large open world map . Traveling options include walking, horse riding and sailing by boat. Fast travel to known locations is also possible. The game takes approximately 100+ hours to complete. The combat mechanics are the same as the earlier Witcher games with some improvements -swordplay action is fast and fluid and magic can be used more effectively when fighting enemies.

The story and narration of the game is very good (perks of being based on a novel) and players will certainly immerse themselves in the magnificently crafted world. The intriguing story, fluid action combat, brilliant crafting systems, huge open world and challenging enemies are the reasons why this game has been awarded several awards including the Game of The Year award.
