You’ve got to admit, gaming is an expensive hobby. More often than not, getting the best games leaves a large, empty hole in your wallet.

Worry not, for all is not lost! There are actually great games out there that don’t cost much. In fact, they don’t cost anything at all except your time – because they’re free. Totally, absolutely free.

Wondering what we’re talking about? Wonder no further. Here we list the 13 Best Downloadable PC Games That You Can Play For Free – games that won’t cost you a dime to play, but will give you experiences rivaling those offered by the most expensive titles. Let’s begin this countdown with entry number…

13. League of Legends

League of Legends is one of the biggest MOBAs in the industry, played by millions of people worldwide. It’s also one of the most popular eSports, with thousands of teams competing for the glory.

There’s a good reason for League of Legends’ success. Quite simply, it’s a lot of fun to play. After picking a champion, you join a team of warriors, enter the battlefield, and attempt to dismantle the enemy team’s forces. The action is fast and furious, but strategy, teamwork, and precise timing also play huge roles in every match. It’s a game that requires as much brain as brawn.

There are four main maps: Summoner’s Rift, Twisted Treeline, Howling Abyss, and Crystal Scar. In addition, you’ve got countless champions to pick from, each with their own unique abilities and personalities. Numerous in-game items can be purchased to tweak your champion’s strengths. All these features give League of Legends immense replay value – so you can be sure you’ll be playing this for a long, long time.

12. ArcheAge

What good is a massive world if you can't go where you want?

ArcheAge, an excellent MMORPG from Korea, boasts a sandbox-style open world that’s not limited by linear progression, so you can go anywhere you want at any time.

It’s got everything you want in the genre: addicting combat, monstrous enemies, hundreds of quests, mounts and pets, and countless treasures. But if you're the type who enjoys sailing on the high seas, though, you’re in luck. ArcheAge features naval combat, allowing you to blow monsters and other unfortunate souls out of the water. Ships can be built and outfitted with the most powerful weapons, so you can live out your Pirates of the Caribbean dreams.

You can build houses too, from tiny cottages to sprawling mansions. What better way to impress your friends than inviting them to your crib? You can even build your own farm, if growing vegetables is your thing.

There’s even a unique justice system which allows players to join a jury to help determine if another player deserves to be punished for crimes such as murder and theft. Now that's something you don't see every day!

11. World of Tanks

The only way you can have enormous tank battles is to go the free-to-play MMO route – and that is exactly what World of Tanks is.

World of Tanks currently comes with over 382 armored vehicles – all visually accurate – from the mid-20th century onwards. They're categorized according to the nations they belong to, which include the United States, the Soviet Union, China, Japan, France, Germany, and Britain. They come in various types: light tanks, medium tanks, heavy tanks, tank destroyers, and self-propelled guns.

There are various battle modes, clan wars, and even options to customize your vehicles to a certain degree. But, as this game isn’t a simulator, control of vehicles has been simplified. While this may turn off the hardcore simulator crowd, it means World of Tanks is a game absolutely anyone can play. In fact, it holds the Guinness World Record for Most Players Online Simultaneously. In 2013, its microtransaction earnings even eclipsed World of Warcraft’s.

10. Wildstar

Wildstar is now free-to-play, which is good, because the game is a blast.

The game tells the story of two factions who are fighting for control over the planet Nexus. First is the Dominion, an intergalactic empire created by the ancient race that once ruled the planet. Their goal is to control the entire galaxy for themselves, because hey. World domination is so yesterday. You gotta think big! As for the other faction, they're called the Exiles, and they're a mixture of various peoples who have been deemed outlaws by the Dominion. Like the Rebels of Star Wars, they've banded together to fight their oppressor.

Each faction has several races to choose from, from the Exile Humans to the Dominion Cassian, who have British accents because why not. There are also six classes, such as the mage-like Esper and the dual pistols-wielding Spellslinger.

The game boasts a freedom of movement unseen in other MMORPGs. Characters can double jump and dash, which is a boon since many quests involve jumping puzzles. Gravity on Nexus also happens to be schizophrenic, as it changes from region to region.

With a unique combat system, an enormous world filled with monsters and items, and tons of activities to participate in, Wildstar is one of the best free downloadable PC games available today. Want to try it out? Here’s the download link!

9. Rift

This fantasy MMORPG is set in Telara, a world that so happens to be the intersection of all elemental Planes (Air, Water, Fire, Earth, Life, and Death). The dragon deities governing each Plane have allied to become the Blood Storm, because it makes them sound like an awesome heavy metal band. Oh, and also because they want to conquer Telara, which is pretty metal, too.

This is where you come in. You’re an Ascended – a superhuman warrior resurrected to destroy the Blood Storm. You can choose from two factions: the religious Guardians, composed of fantasy races such as dwarves and high elves, and the Defiant, a science and technology-based group consisting of humanoid and dark elf-like creatures.

The world is built around rifts. These spawn vomit monsters into the world, monsters who then attempt to conquer the surrounding regions. Should players ignore these rifts, the invading forces will spread and make everybody’s lives miserable. Players therefore have to work together to destroy rifts whenever they appear.

Rift also has a soul system that allows an extreme degree of character customization. Want to be a healer and tank at the same time? No problem! The system allows such uncanny combinations. Switching between roles is easy, so you can be a high damage-dealing warrior the next, and a sly, stealthy rogue the next. This gives every character a versatility unseen in other MMORPGs.

8. PlanetSide 2

An MMO first-person shooter, PlanetSide 2 is set on Auraxis, a humongous open world where thousands of players vie for control of numerous territories.

Players can choose from three factions: the authoritarian Terran Republic, who have fast medium tanks; the freedom fighters, the New Conglomerate, whose forces include heavily armored tanks; and the cult-like Vanu Sovereinty whose tanks, known as Magriders, levitate.

Yes, ladies and gentlemen. PlanetSide 2 has floating tanks.

PlanetSide 2 puts an emphasis on teamwork and player skill. Unique gameplay features include a persistent day/night cycle, which adds tactical considerations to combat, as darkness can offer concealment for coordinated offensives. Controlling territories also provides faction bonuses, while experience points allow players to unlock new skills, weapon and vehicle upgrades, and more.

7. War Thunder

A free-to-play MMO game inspired by World War II? Count us in!

In War Thunder, you can wage war on other players either on land or in the air. While there are more aircraft (over 350 of them), the number of armored vehicles is nothing to scoff at, either. A majority of the tanks are from World War II, but there are also those from other significant conflicts such as the Korean War and the Spanish Civil War. And of course, expect tanks from the United States, Germany, and the Soviet Union.

There are several battle modes, including “arcade battles” and “unrealistic battles.” The latter features ridiculous vehicles such as planes that look like My Little Pony characters, an experimental weapon from Japan called “Gaijilla,” and a tank inspired by the M4 Sherman, except that is has bouncy rubber armor and shoots vegetables. For serious players who want authenticity and challenge, they’ll be overjoyed by the modes “realistic battles” and “simulator battles.”

And the best thing about War Thunder? The updates – which means that we’ll always be getting new content, from vehicles to maps.

6. Heroes of the Storm

Blizzard’s Heroes of the Storm is a relatively young MOBA, but it already boasts a considerable roster featuring some very recognizable names. Kerrigan? Arthas? Diablo? These gaming icons are all present and accounted for!

But there’s more to this game than its star-studded roster. It also comes with more battlegrounds than other MOBAs – each offering a secondary objective that drastically affects team strategy. So you better learn how to work together, because in Heroes of the Storm, if you want to win, you’ll have to cooperate closely with your allies.

Blizzard also did away with purchasable in-game items which, we have to admit, is a feature that has become far too bloated in most MOBAs. Instead, you can customize your character’s build using the Talent system. This makes the game friendlier to newcomers, while providing the depth that veterans crave.

With iconic heroes that are a blast to play, one-of-a-kind battle arenas that encourage a fluidity of strategies, and gameplay that pushes cooperation to the forefront of any team tactic, Blizzard’s Heroes of the Storm is shaping up to be one of the most thrilling MOBAs in the industry.

5. Path of Exile

Those disappointed with Diablo III’s somewhat cartoony visuals will love Path of Exile’s grim tone and ridiculous levels of bloodletting.

Like Blizzard’s hack-and-slash dungeon crawlers, Path of Exile is about clicking on hordes of monsters until they explode in a fountain of gore, collecting loot with names you can’t pronounce, and hacking your way through randomly generated caves, dungeons, and other dangerous areas.

The six classes to choose from are the Duelist, Marauder, Ranger, Shadow, Templar, and Witch. Additionally, you can unlock the Scion by setting her free towards the conclusion of Act 3. Each character has their own strengths and weaknesses, with over a thousand skills at their disposal to wreak havoc with.

We’re happy to say this game isn’t only addictively fun, it is visually impressive as well. The level of violence is something you’d expect from a title inspired by the Diablo franchise. It’s even bloodier than Diablo III!

4. Tribes: Ascend

Free-to-play Tribes: Ascend is the Tribes’ series multiplayer first-person shooter.

Cool features from the franchise carry over into Tribes: Ascend. Tired of boring old walking and running? Soar into the air with a jetpack, or careen down slopes by “skiing.” Trust us, it’s as exhilarating as shooting an enemy in the groin.

Aside from three armor types, you also get to bring two weapons and a bunch of grenades to battle. And the more you play, the more experience points you get, which boosts the amount of equipment you get to choose from. Gear upgrade is affected by how often they’re used, or your character’s level.

Tribes: Ascend comes with several modes from Capture the Flag to Team Deathmatch. Maps are often large and range from bases to urban areas. There’s a ton of variety here, so you’ll be playing for as long as your bloodlust demands fresh meat to perforate with bullets!

Here’s the game’s official site!

3. Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft

There’s nothing more dangerously addictive than a well-made collectible card game.

And Blizzard’s Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft is one of the best online card games in existence. Like all card games, Hearthstone is turn-based, and involves players using their deck to bring their opponent’s health down to zero.

The starting deck is composed of useful cards, but if you’re going to get far in Hearthstone, you’re going to have to get those rarer cards. You can purchase card packs using real money, or, alternatively, you can buy them using farmed in-game gold. Quests and special events also hand out those rare cards every once in a while, so you can still build a considerably powerful deck without reaching into your bank account.

There are near 700 unique cards, with more on the way. That’s a whole lot of possible card combinations, which means you can customize your playstyle to your heart’s content.

2. Guild Wars 2

Guild Wars is one of the longest-running MMORPG franchises in the industry. Guild Wars 2 builds on what was great in the original, and multiplies that by a factor of 10.

With five races and eight professions to choose from, character customization in Guild Wars 2 is among the best in the genre. Wondering why there’s no healer class? Well, every class has some capacity to heal. This makes the game less restrictive, as anyone can party with just about anyone and survive.

Instead of the traditional grind-heavy quest, Guild Wars 2 has dynamic events, which change according to the decisions players make. This helps the world feel less static, and gives every player a sense that their choices matter in this world.

With plenty of activities, such as guild battles and the opportunity to join a large scale war, Guild Wars 2 is one of the best free downloadable PC games you can play.

1. Dota 2

Here it is, the king of the MOBA scene: Dota 2.

Like all MOBAs, gameplay involves two teams of five (called Dire and Radiant) duking it out on a large battleground filled with creeps, minions, and fortresses. The first team to destroy their opponent’s Ancient wins.

There are 110 heroes to choose from, all with their own unique abilities. As they level up, you can unlock new skills or upgrade their statistics. In addition, gold can be used to purchase items for a variety of benefits.

It all sounds very simple, as all MOBAs do. But it’s Dota 2’s surprisingly complexity that makes it the best of the best. Mastering your character, cooperating with your allies, and winning team matches requires layer upon layer of strategy – not to mention quick reflexes. It’s a pretty demanding game, especially when you’re up against experienced opponents. This is what makes it such a great eSport; the fact that it’s a game where success depends on skill, observation, timing, and the ability to adapt quickly to the situation.

Definitely one of the best free downloadable PC games – and you can find it here.
