Let’s roll back the gaming industries hand of time, before the invention of instant access and downloadable extras. When gamers had to physically leave their homes and meet the employees working in several EbGames, Media Play and Gamestop stores throughout the country. The countless bins containing used games and accessories required nearly 30 minutes to an hour to reach the bottom.
Tossing aside the games already owned or so bad that the mere mention of their name would revoke you’re status as a serious gamer. The glimmering hope of finding that one game listed as in stock but seamlessly unreachable kept gamers on the hunt.
Eventually, gamers would finally be rewarded with the crown jewel of their search. That one game which made the entire trip worth the painstakingly endless drive finally reveals itself. Fortunately, for the veterans and newcomers alike, we have not forgotten about the games encoded on five and six cd’s which offered endless hours of game play.

11. Curse of Monkey Island
Where are we?
The Curse of Monkey Island was released in 1997 and followed the highly revered and rewarding predecessors entitled, The Secret of Monkey Island and Monkey Island 2. These games took a cartoonish cell shaded approach to gaming. The protagonist of the story centers around a man by the name of Guybrush Threepwood.
Aside from his very unique name, this romance stricken aspirant pirate seeks to remove the curse from his lover (Elaine Marley). On his journey, he will encounter magic, treasure, voodoo and of course his arch nemesis, Lechuck. This unforgettable game will easy take you back to a time when gaming was much simpler and relied on story and mystery, rather than graphics and gimmicks.
10. Company of Heroes
Tanks Tanks and more Tanks!!!
For all of the military simulator addicts, company of heroes provided a jaw dropping experience which set a new standard for real time strategy fanatics. Developed by Relic in 2006, company of hero’s accurately offered players an experience unlike any other. Every aspect of the game ranging from the soldiers, to the weapons, tanks and artillery fire exhilarates the senses.
Players are immersed in a world recreated to depict the battle scared crater filled lands resulting from the constant bombing of allied and axis factions. Whether tanks or artillery are you’re forte, company of heroes is sure to astound and leave even the newest of gamers hungering for more.
9. Heroes of Might and Magic 2
Old Magic is Still Good Magic
Magical creatures spell’s and the conquest of glory accompanied by a phenomenal soundtrack perfectly describe the experiences of this legendary game. Popping the ancient CD into the now seemingly obsolete CD drive will remind gamers of a much simpler gaming industry. Players can choose from six different classes ranging from knight to necromancer.
Each faction offers a unique set of units that all equally provide various benefits and hindrances. Players must build a stable economy before pumping out powerful units used in the conquest of your enemies. Whether fire breathing dragons or powerful ogres are you’re unit of choice, Heroes of Might and Magic 2 will reignite the fire for turn based strategy.
8. Giant Citizen Kabuto
Whose Next
Innovative for its time, Giant Citizen Kabuto offered players the opportunity to destroy one another in three unique ways. First, players could choose the Meccarryns race. These tiny yet vigilant warriors used advanced technology accompanied by jet packs to bring their foes to justice.
Explosives, guns, and unique backpacks with various abilities are also in their arsenal. The second race known as Sea Reapers, were comparable to mermaids and used various spells to cause harm to any opposition. Seas Reapers most advantageous situations always involved water, which allowed the race to regain health. Lastly, the big daddy topping them all is the Kabuto.
This giant used brute strength to overcome all situations. Elbow drops, claps and bone crunching foot stomps breaks the will of adversaries and provides player with a satisfyingly exquisite experience.
7. Command And Conquer Red Alert 2
Blimps Never Get Old
The second installment in the Red Alert Series, this game provided players with some of the most unique tactics and units ever conceived in a real time strategy game. Containing two playable races, the Axis and Allies, both sides varied greatly in the methods used to overcome similar adverse events. Although the campaign offers players a fascinating alternative to the extreme action of skirmishes, some of the main highlights of the game arrived in the form of each factions super weapons.
The nuclear missile and weather control device unleashes devastating consequences on the opposing faction. This level of destruction is only rivaled by the gloating which would ensue upon forcing you’re opponent into submission.
6. Unreal tournament 2004
Teleport Imminent
With all the new shooters constantly being released on various platforms, you may be wondering why would I want to reload this ancient first person shooter? Well the answer is simple, because this game is AWESOME. This blast from the past offered graphics card shattering graphics for its time and the use of vehicular warfare.
Rocket launchers, machine guns and alternative secondary weapons fire for guns and vehicles was introduced in this installment of the series. The scorpion, manta and leviathan allowed for co-op game vehicle game play which was rather new to the gaming industry. Reloading this phenomenal shooter will surely reinvigorate players and force them to appreciate the seemingly errorless game play players experience today.
5. Final Fantasy 7
Return of the Buster Sword
Possibly the most iconic of the games listed, Final Fantasy 7 gave players a storyline which at the time was left unrivaled. Outside of the amazing storyline, the series also created two of the most amazing characters the gaming industry has ever known, Cloud and Sephiroth are known by nearly every single gamer having ever searched the word video game on Google. The buster sword and masamune are the two legendary swords wielded by cloud and Sephiroth respectively.
The incorporation of magical attacks and earth shattering summons left players craving for more. Numerous Final Fantasies have been created following Final Fantasy 7, but few have left such an initial impact as the awe shocking experience of Cloud and Sephiroth.
4. Max Payne
Bullet Time
Rocket launchers, machine guns and shot guns could only get a developer so far. But in 2002, Max Payne offered players the use of bullet time. With the click of a button players could slow time and watch as bullets whizzed inches past their character only to hit bottles and posters residing behind you’re seemingly god like character.
This on the run DEA detective is investigating the murder of his family and seeks revenge on the ones which caused him so much heartache. This classic action packed thriller will leave you on the edge of you’re seat with one of the best game play mechanics and storylines ever created.
3. Thief the Dark Project
Trusty Bow and Arrows in Hand
If stealth assassination and sword based combat peaks youre interest, then the original thief will surely hold you’re attention across this 13 hour campaign. Players will be forced to cunningly dispose of knights, spiders and even zombies. Fortunately players are equipped with broad head, water, fire and even rope arrows to assist them in their endeavors.
The games main character Garrett, is a master thief recruited by an organization known as the Keepers. Although originally seeking to steal from the rich to make himself wealthier, Garrett eventually becomes involved in a series of events which ultimately rocks the very core of Garrets foundation.
2. Sea Dogs
A Pirates Life for Me
Pirates, cannons and the lust for treasure accurately describes the game play of this highly anticipated pirate simulator. Wannabe pirates are offered various cannons ammunitions and an assortment of ships to choose from.
Players search the seven seas in order to strengthen their personal armadas and steal the abundance of wealth to be found on the high seas. Warships, galleons and corvettes provide different attributes which should tailor to every players unique game play ideas and tactics. Either blast youre opponents with tons of firepower or slip around their blind side to board without opposition. These are all tactics available in this classic sea based warfare simulator.

Topping the chart as the number one old but still awesome pc game is Half Life. Every aspect of this game reeks of awesome. Players take on the role of Dr. Gordon Freeman who works for a corporation whose experiments have gone completely wrong. This talented theoretical physicist must fight his way through a now alien infested facility containing several unknown dangers.
To make matters worse, the hazardous environment combat unit has been deployed to assist in the cleanup of the corporation’s fatal experiment. Freeman questions his entire involvement in the experiment as a constant figure only known as the G man makes a semi regular appearance to observe the progress of Freemans actions. Half Life received several awards for its innovative game play and still casts a majestic spell over players willing to boot this aged first person shooter.
