Will Blizzard ever make a Starcraft movie?

If you’re an avid StarCraft fan such as myself, you must have wondered, why hasn’t Blizzard made a movie from such an amazing storyline? All the fundamental elements of an award winning movie of epic proportions have already been laid. Starcraft has, love, hatred, anger, heroes, villains, monsters and even robots. What more could a science fiction fanatic need?

Sure the game has its occasional flaws and what the heck moments, but which good movie doesn’t? Unfortunately, a Starcraft movie does not currently exist, but nevertheless we can keep our fingers crossed. In the meantime, there are movies which strongly resemble the Starcraft universe.

The tenacity of the Terran, swarm-like characteristics of the Zerg, and technological superiority of the Protoss is elements captured several times on the big screen in varying forms. This countdown is dedicated to the top ten movies that every Starcraft player should see.

Sit back and enjoy the countdown, because at the moment, these films are the closest you can get to a live action Starcraft movie.

10. Star Trek Into Darkness

Starting the countdown of 10 movies every StarCraft player must watch is Star trek into Darkness.

The plot essentially revolves around captain James Tiberius Kirk seeking revenge for his fallen mentor while unveiling a conspiracy which extends to the highest ranks of star fleet.

James Raynor, one of the main protagonists in the StarCraft universe, is essentially a less arrogant version of captain Kirk. Relentlessly pursuing his corrupted love, James Raynor stops at nothing to recover the lovely Sarah Kerrigan.

Both of these captains command powerful ships capable of immense destruction.  StarCraft and Star Trek into Darkness both share similar ideas as well as technologies. These captains will destroy any foe and stop at nothing to regain that which was lost.

9. Elysium

Elysium relates to the Starcraft universe with the concept of the poor class constantly being overlooked and left to die by those capable, but unwilling to share resources which prevent illness.

Max Da Costa seeks in the film Elysium, medical attention for a lethal dose of radiation acquired during an unfortunate accident.

The colonists in the outer systems of the StarCraft universe are subject to Zerg infestations which could have been prevented were the governments willing to expend the necessary resources. Both civilians in the StarCraft and Elysium fictional worlds could have avoided bloodshed had equal considerations been given to human lives regardless of economic status.

8. Battle Los Angeles

Battle Los Angeles easily claims the number eight position in our ten movies every StarCraft player should watch due to the simple fact that in both series aliens love to wreak havoc on human populations.

Although arguably much less technologically superior as the awe inspiring Protoss, the alien population in Battle Los Angeles is no less effective. The large ships which landed in the earth’s oceans, thought to be meteors in the movie, are equitable in idea to the colossus present in the StarCraft universe.

This movie, similar to the Starcraft universe, shows the fact that humanity is at a disadvantage, but pushes forward regardless of the staggering odds. This parallel thought process should be more than enough to draw any fan of the StarCraft universe into a bullet whizzing, explosion viewing popcorn eating adventurous night in front of the television.

7. Edge of Tomorrow

Live, Die, Repeat is the general theme for the film Edge of Tomorrow.

Similar to the StarCraft universe, mankind must defend its world from an unknown alien invader known as mimics. These invaders appear mechanical, but also slightly organic. Regardless, these beings exist only to see the destruction of the human race.

Using advanced technological suits, although not as advanced as the marines in the StarCraft world, humanity seeks to make one final stand. With trusty rifles and pistols in hand, similar heroes in both storylines take the step towards the final battle against their alien adversaries. This film could have easily swapped the cast with Zerg and Terran units to make a decent StarCraft movie.

6. Alien vs Predator Series

6. Alien vs Predator Series

Who could ever forget a predator de-cloaking for the first time to present himself as a worthy opponent before his prey?

These fearless hunters seem to share a similar technology with their distant Protoss cousins. Although completely different in mindset and battle tactics, both the Protoss and Yautja (predators) have similarly advanced technologies used to slightly tip the balance in favor of the hunter.

Protoss use dark Templars to help aid in the fight against the Zerg swarm. Both alien races are constantly traveling the galaxy in search of their sworn enemies to prevent further infestation and bloodshed.

5. Cloverfied

5.  Cloverfied

Colossally crashing into the number five position is cloverfield.

The gigantic beast in this movie could have easily been replaced with a Brutalisk or Ultralisk from the Starcraft universe. These beings of immense size fear nothing and with good reason. Towering above any opponent and shrugging of some of the most detrimental firepower mankind could devise, these towering behemoths appear nearly unstoppable.

A Brutalisk being controlled by the queen of blades fights on her behalf. The monster in cloverfield seems to randomly attack humans, regardless of the situation. Whether or not this monster was being driven by an unknown power is still up for debate, but regardless, the outcome for any human standing in their way is surely imminent defeat.

4. Independence Day

The idea of aliens invading earth and offering no terms for peace seems rather familiar. Where has this idea been seen before? Oh, that’s right in the amazing game known none other than Starcraft.

The Zerg swarm seems to care nothing about a mutual partnership unless that partnership involves the conquering and genetic mutation of its subservient and humble host.

Aliens seeking to conquer earth in this amazing film can be thought of as a combination between Protoss and Zerg. This idea was also in the Starcraft universe in the form of hybrids. Any science fiction film fan that plays StarCraft should easily recognize the similarities between this amazing game and phenomenal movie along with the potential for a Starcraft movie.

3. Pacific Rim

3 Pacific Rim

Making its way from the abyss into the third position on our countdown is the robotic alien destroying film Pacific Rim.

In this film, similar to humanity in StarCraft, mankind decides the best way to stop the plague upon their world known as Kaijus, is with technology. Large mechanical suits with mega weaponry are built to combat this alien race.

Lurking in a portal deep beneath the Pacific Ocean, these monsters can only be thwarted by the brave pilots of the Jaeger program. Wielding their giant robotic suits, similar to Thors in StarCraft, humanities strikes out in one final clutch effort to save mankind and prevent its extinction. Once again, this film could have easily swapped the cast with Zerg and Terran units to make a decent Starcraft movie.

2. War of The Worlds

2. War of The Worlds

I could not have been the only person thinking, dear god the Protoss has ditched the Zerg hunt and turned their gaze to humanity when viewing the trailer for War of the Worlds.

The unforgettably large silver mechanical walkers in the film are nearly identical to the colossus used by the Protoss to eradicate their foes. Even the beams of light which vaporize their targets are similar to the thermal lances used in the Starcraft world. Capable of scaling all forms of terrain and wielding an impervious shield, these parallel pieces of technology must stem from the same race I thought.

This movie was nearly an identical copy of the Starcraft universe and held my number one spot for a long time. Unfortunately, this movie was moved to the number two position when I re-watched the film, which stole the number one position in our countdown.

1. Starship Troopers

1. Starship Troopers

Taking the number one position on our countdown of movies every Starcraft player should view is none other than the 1997 film Starship Troopers.

This movie captured humanity's struggle against a foreign invader in a nearly perfectly synchronized method as that seen in the Starcraft universe.

Taking the fights against the bugs, aka the Zerg swarm in StarCraft, mankind seeks the eradication of their adversaries on several battlefields. Being vastly outnumbered and having nothing more than one another to depend on, this film easily takes the prize in our countdown.

If you are an avid StarCraft player or serious enthusiast, this film will surely animate the struggle which you constantly read about or live through in your daily battle net skirmishes.

For any fans of the Starcraft universe or movie critics alike, if you feel some movies should have made it into our top ten countdown feel free to mention them. I am always looking for new films to replace the movies listed on our countdown. Until then, stay safe from alien invaders, and carry a big gun.
