Ajay Ghale, a young man who lives in the US, returns to his home country of Kyrat to scatter the ashes of his deceased mother, according to her last will. However, he find his homeland, which was once a peaceful country controlled by a royal family, is now locked a civil war between the country's Royal Army led by the tyrant Pagan Min and the Golden Path, a rebel group that wants to free Kyrat from the hands of its tyrant lord.

On his way to complete his quest, Ajay’s bus is ambushed by the Royal Army and he’s taken away as a hostage by Min’s followers. He is later rescued by the Golden Path’s leader, Sabal, who invites Ajay to join their cause. And Ajay Ghale is no ordinary person for the Golden Path: his father, Mohan Ghale, was the founder of the group. Playing as Ajay, you must lead this nation to freedom.

To achieve your goal, you must dominate outposts and enemy checkpoints to gain control over the Royal Army’s defenses; obtain weapons like pistols and shotguns to rocket launchers and machine guns, and upgrade them to your liking; complete missions and side-quests to unlock new abilities and perks which will assist you on the battlefield; and watch your back, as the wild land of Kyrat is not only filled with armed enemies, but also with dangerous animals like tigers and bears. Defeat your enemies with help from the Golden Path and release this exploited country from its oppressive bounds.
