10. Captain’s Chest

Being the most valuable regular chest in the game, the Captain’s Chest is a common find for any player who completes Gold Hoarder voyages, forts, or Pirate Legend Voyages.

Being worth between 560-1,100 coins, the Captain’s Chest is an easy-to-obtain yet valuable treasure item.

With the…

  • Prestige of a Captain
  • Reasonable value
  • Easy-to-find nature

… The Captain’s chest is a great find for anyone sailing the Sea of Thieves who wants to start lining their pockets with gold.

9. Chest of The Damned

In a humble 9th place, I am pleased to introduce the Chest Of The Damned. Brace yourself as you battle those from the realm of the Damned - a place where legendary stories and untold riches await.

With a base worth of 1,000-1,600 coins, this chest won’t make you rich, but it’ll definitely leave you with a great story to tell.

This chest is only available during a Ghost Ship voyage from the Order of Souls faction, from Sea Forts, or from the Legend Of The Veil voyage (Athena’s Fortune).

Because of this exclusivity, this chest is looked at as more of a symbol of experience rather than a sign of wealth.

I know some of you money-hungry pirates will want to overlook this chest, but just wait! Since this chest is available from Ghost Fleets, it very commonly spawns in large bunches. In fact, if you are battling a Flamehart fleet, you can expect to get upwards of 15 chests!

With the Chest Of The Damned’s…

  • Strength (and wealth) in numbers
  • Exclusive origins
  • Symbolic significance

… The Chest of The Damned is both a worthy treasure and an iconic item within the realm of The Sea Of Thieves.

8. Stronghold chest

Next up on the list is a chest that is much more difficult to obtain but yields much more gold for any pirate skilled enough to find it.

The stronghold chest is found in two places:

1. Inside Fort vaults (any type of Fort will have this chest)

2. Inside the stomach of a Megalodon (obtainable after the Megalodon is killed)

Since the Stronghold Chest is much more difficult to obtain, it naturally yields a much higher reward, with each Stronghold chest being worth 1,500-3000 gold depending on how lucky you are!

Because the Stronghold Chest is….

  • Difficult to obtain
  • Sure to yield a large amount of gold
  • Found (in forts) in quantities of 2 or more

… this chest is absolutely worth all the effort it takes to acquire it and will compensate you adequately for your troubles.

7. Chest of A Thousand Grogs

In 7th place, we have one of my least favourite chests and the first cursed chest on this list - the Chest of A Thousand Grogs.

Not only will this chest give you substantial wealth, but it’ll also give you great fun, or annoyance, depending on how much fun you want to have!

As the name suggests, the moment you pick up this chest, your pirate will experience the drunkenness effect, making your pirate sway from side to side and have very blurry vision.

Also, as the name suggests, you can refill your Tankard from this chest up to 1,000 times, allowing you to experience EVEN MORE drunkenness!

With the Chest of A Thousand Grogs…

  • Substantial value of 2,200-2,600 coins
  • Drunken effects when held
  • Virtually endless grog supply

… This chest is a MUST if you and your crew are trying to have some fun out on the high seas.

6. Chest of Ancient Tributes

In a worthy 6th place is the Chest of Ancient Tributes. Being one of the first chests I ever obtained in Sea Of Thieves, the Chest of Ancient Tributes holds a very special place in my heart.

I remember that one day, my friend called me and told me about this game that the group was playing - He said it was called Sea Of Thieves. It was a pirate game where you got to fight skeletons and players alike, sail ships, and complete thrilling voyages. Skeptical, I whipped out my credit card and bought the PC version (the better version by far). My friend, who was Gold Hoarder Reputation 20, picked out a Treasure Vault as my first voyage. Questioning my 50-dollar purchase, I sailed with my friend to get the map pieces and eventually to the vault itself. Before letting me do the honours of opening the vault, my friend gave me a quick pep talk, saying that our time in the vault was limited and that my job was to collect the gold and parkour my way to any loot that shined in my eyes. Following his instructions, I opened the vault and immediately did as I was told until he unlocked it. There, the Chest of Ancient Tributes sat like a child waiting to be picked up by its parents. I grabbed the chest, put it outside the gate of the vault, and grabbed as much loot as I could before drowning. After making it back from the ferry, I grabbed the chest and took it back to the ship, exhilarated by our find. Since we had a Gold Hoarders emissary up, we made about 6,000 coins on the chest since the chest has a base worth of 3,000 - 3,500 coins.

Since the Chest of Ancient Tributes…

  • Was my first ever valuable chest
  • Is worth a great amount of gold
  • Is easy to obtain (through Gold Hoarder vaults)

… It takes an easy sixth place.

5. Chest of Rage

Taking fifth place on this list and also being the second cursed chest, we have the Chest of Rage - an annoying treasure that has made me rage quit on multiple occasions.

With a base value of 3,000-3,500 coins and being available through regular X marks the spot Gold Hoarder voyages, it may be hard to see why this chest has made countless pirates uninstall.

However, this chest’s cursed effect might make you have second thoughts about picking it up after you dig it out of the ground.

Every two minutes of being left unattended, this chest will explode, damaging creatures, pirates, gunpowder barrels/kegs, and ships in range of it. Although this effect cannot be nullified completely, it can be delayed. By bailing water on this chest or partially filling your hull in water and leaving the chest in the water, you can delay the effects slightly.

Also, this chest will explode in a mere 10 seconds if any pirate trying to be a prankster decides to hit it repeatedly with a cutlass.

Because the Chest of Rage…

  • Explodes often
  • Can activate kegs
  • Is worth a generous 3000 coins

… it is a great treasure item for anyone that likes making life unnecessarily difficult.

4. Chest of Sorrow

In fourth place is yet another cursed chest - the third and final one of this list - The Chest of Sorrow, a chest with an almost contagious sense of sadness.

Being also worth 3,000 - 3,500 coins, this is a worthy treasure, which is equally as annoying as the Chest of Rage.

The cursed effect of this chest is that it will periodically start crying uncontrollably, making a pool of tears around it. This effect will quickly flood any ship that this chest is on. Thankfully though, the chest makes a crying sound whenever it starts flooding the ship, making clean-up easy.

Also, this chest can be used offensively as a way to passively sink enemy ships, making it an annoying yet versatile treasure item.

Because this chest…

  • Is extremely annoying for anyone peacefully sailing the seas
  • Gives a cash prize well worth the effort
  • Can be used as a weapon

…it easily takes fourth place on this list.

3. Chest Of Legends

In third place, we have a chest that is widely regarded as the best chest in the game - the Chest of Legends or the Athena’s Chest.

This chest is only available through voyages for the Athena’s Fortune faction, as well as in the Fort of The Damned vault.

I vividly remember obtaining my first Chest of Legends. After ages of sailing with my pirate crew, my best friend finally obtained Pirate Legend status, allowing us to do Athena’s Fortune voyages. Immediately after obtaining this status, he bought an Athena’s Fortune voyage and placed it on the Captain’s table. Eager to see our first Chest of Legends, the rest of the crew and I immediately voted for the voyage, and we set sail.

It wasn’t me who found the chest - It was a different member of our crew who started screaming once he saw the chest. I sword-lunged to where he was, and we all celebrated our first Chest of Legends.

Singing shanties like Summon the Megalodon, as well as the Athena’s Fortune Shanty (We Shall Sail Together) on our way back to the outpost, every member of the crew, including me, were exhilarated at our find.

Because the Chest of Legends…

  • Is extremely valuable (being worth between 8,600 - 11,000 coins at base value)
  • Is only available to Pirate Legends
  • Is very difficult to obtain

… it is one of the MOST prestigious chests in the game and should be celebrated by any pirate skilled enough to obtain it.

2. Reaper’s Bounty

In second place is the Reaper’s Bounty, a chest that will make you sail through dangerous waters and fight PvP battles against all those who wish for the same treasure.

The Reaper’s Bounty can be easily found by any pirate, as it has a bright yellow beacon of light that disappears once a player interacts with it.

Additionally, it can be seen on the map, making any pirate crew with this chest an easy target to find.

This chest is worth a very substantial 10,000 coins (base, no emissary) to anyone able to sell it.

With…

  • Incomparable worth at 10,000 coins
  • A fun bonus of endless PvP
  • Very large reputation gain for the Reaper’s Bones faction

… The Reaper’s Bounty is a chest that is obtainable only by the most skilled of pirates.

1. Chest of Fortune

Taking an easy first place is the Chest of Fortune, the most valuable and sought-after treasure item in Sea Of Thieves that I personally have NEVER obtained in my life.

This luxurious chest is only available in Fort of Fortune vaults, being the signature item of the vault.

Very few players have ever obtained this chest, and those who do are of the most skilled players in the entire community.

To obtain this chest, you must:

1. Find a Fort of Fortune (be lucky enough for one to spawn in your server)

2. Sail to the Fort of Fortune

3. Fight off every other player in the server who also wants to take the Fort.

4. Win every fight

5. Beat every wave of the Fort before any players sail back.

6. Kill all the skeleton captains, preferably using cannons.

7. Fight off every other player in the server again because finishing the Fort gave them ample time to gather resources and sail back to the fort. By this time, your resources are greatly depleted, so any fight you engage in is automatically in the enemy’s favour.

8. Find a way to loot everything in the vault while fending off the entire server.

9. If you’re still alive, you need to sail to one of the nearest outposts (not THE nearest outpost, as more enemies will be waiting there to steal the Chest of Fortune at the last second).

10. Somehow make it off your ship alive, onto the outpost.

11. If, by some miracle, there are no enemies waiting to ambush you before you sell the chest, you can walk your way to the Gold Hoarders tent and receive your 20,000 gold (most likely 50,000 because at this point, you would probably have max emissary level)

If you are a player who is skilled enough to complete those 11 steps and make it out alive, congratulations - you’ve successfully sold the Chest of Fortune, the...

  • Rarest
  • Most prestigious and valuable
  • Best chest in the game.

… You have become a member of the top 0.1% of individuals who are both lucky enough and skilled enough to obtain this elusive item. Good job.
