What Are Best RPGs With Character Creation?

Role-playing games let us live out some of our greatest fantasies like slaying dragons, saving the world and owning a house. Whether your main character is dead, alive, or somewhere in between, these games will let you adjust your appearance and abilities to however you see fit.

11. Wasteland 3

Wasteland 3: A Frosty Reception

Wasteland 3 is an isometric RPG where the player must survive the snowy, apocalyptic land of Colorado through different dialogue choices, multi-person strategy and tactical combat. with buried tech, secrets and several bloodthirsty factions at every turn.  This game introduces the series-first ability to play through the campaign with a friend in multiplayer mode, and playing without your friend for too long could result in unintended consequences.  Wasteland 3 is currently set to release in late 2019.

This video starts off with a vehicle careening through a snowy wasteland, before coming to a faction base and dialogue begins between the faction leader and the player. The introduction of a heavily tattooed cannibal makes the atmosphere much more tense and exciting, and I like how the video shows several different dialogue choices that can reflect how your character engages with the world, before entering combat and showing footage of the game.

10. Tyranny

Tyranny: Helpful Tips for Character Creation

In this fantasy world that’s set roughly between the bronze and iron ages, the war between good and evil has ended, and evil has won (or else the game would have been pretty boring). As an officer of the evil overlord’s forces, the player can interact and roam in this nonlinear RPG and experience a range of different endings through decisions which, much like in the studio’s other games: Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II and Fallout: New Vegas, are difficult to see on a moral standpoint.

What I really enjoyed about the video was that Vickriman starts off by telling about the lore of Tyranny as he goes through the different character options, giving some more broad insight into the character choices instead of bombarding you with specifics. He speaks in a very friendly tone, as if you’re just hanging out in the living room together playing games, which is a great way to play these kinds of nonlinear RPGs.

You start the character creation process just like in real life: Naked.

9. Pillars of Eternity 2

Inspired by various Dungeons and Dragons games including Baldur’s Gate and Planescape, Pillars of Eternity 2 is a classic RPG where the player must hunt down the god that nearly killed them in order to save their soul and find answers that mere mortals may not ever wish to know. Fans of DnD have plenty of quests and choices to keep them busy.

‘Hippy Dippy’ is a term I’m going to use forever now, thanks to RPG Alex in this delightful video. This guide is very detailed, as this game offers hundreds of combinations of classes, subclasses and races; but RPG Alex also goes into the specific abilities of each class, giving the viewer a more solid idea of how to build up their character for the game ahead.

What's more badass than hunting down a god? You. That's what.

8. Skyrim

Skyrim Character Creation Guide / Walkthrough (ALL RACES, MALE AND FEMALE!!)

Skyrim is a third person open-world RPG, the fifth installation set in the Elder Scrolls world of Tamriel. The player learns they are the last of the fabled Dragonborn, a mortal with the ability to learn draconic words of power that they can use to defeat monsters and eventually slay the dragon Alduin, the god of destruction. A must-play for any fan of open-world games, Skyrim offers hundreds of hours of gameplay with just a single character.

GhostRobo goes through every single race and their preset appearances for both male and female, giving the viewer a quick rundown of the thousands of possibilities. There’s some nutty dialogue as well, making for both a full and entertaining video. He had me at ‘Muppets on drugs’.

In Skyrim, you can dress up with colorful, permanent war paint. Or as we call them, 'tattoos'.

7. Fallout 4

Fallout 4 - Character Creation in Depth

Fallout 4 is another of Bethesda’s wildly popular open-world RPGs, where the player has hundreds of hours worth of exploring, crafting and chatting to keep them busy in the deadly aftermath of the Great War and help in the quest to find their missing son. There are monsters to fight, NPCs to intimidate, and settlements to settle, so your post-apocalyptic adventure will be one to remember!

Curse Entertainment presents their video with a lot of detail, showing how intricate the player can get in manually shaping their character’s appearance. They do a great job in showing the different preset options as well as the sculpting tool, and they do cover both male and female characters in this guide.

You can create both husband and wife in Fallout 4, before your painstakingly crafted spouse gets murdered in front of your eyes.

6. Dragon Age: Inquisition

Dragon Age Inquisition | Character Creation 101 | Hint Vlog Tutorial Tips Kinda Thing

Just as in the previous Dragon Age games, Dragon Age: Inquisition puts the player in the war-torn land of Thedas, where the whole world is currently in danger of complete and total destruction- and you’re the prime suspect. The player must fight monsters, flirt with NPCs and complete both side quests and the linear plot quests to ultimately take down the evil Corypheus, who threatens to destroy the world in his quest for godhood.

What I really enjoy about Ninja Flips’ video is that he goes into artistic ideas such as framing and using photos as reference, which is fantastic because Inquisition really lets you micromanage your character’s design through eye shape, iris color, inner iris color, eyeliner; nose width, bridge, point… you get the picture. You can apply these design tips to other games that let you micromanage your appearance, so it’s really just a great video to watch for anyone who loves designing characters.

Every race in Inquisition has its own special perks: humans get a bonus ability point, dwarves get magical resistance, and elves get pointy ears and sweet divine-inspired tattoos.

5. Divinity Original Sin II

DIVINITY ORIGINAL SIN 2 - Ultimate Character Creation Guide (Explaining Stats, Abilities...)

Divinity: Original Sin II is an isometric RPG where the player has a bounty on their head because they are a Sourcerer, having special powers that the Divine Order (the ruling authority) has deemed illegal. The player must interact with their world much like similar isometric RPGs through plenty of combat, quests and NPC interactions.

Any video that starts off with ‘Hello my beloved bastards’ immediately has my attention. RPG Division goes into detail about balancing your character’s stats as to fit with the rest of the party. Even if you’re a pro at character customization, it’s very hypnotic and soothing to watch the wizard character make her staff levitate as you remind yourself of the different attributes and different ways of building up your party.

Elegant, AND a corpse eater. You can make quite the catch in the second Divinity.

4. Mount & Blade: Warband

Warband Tips and Tricks: Character Creation

Mount&Blade is an RPG without a linear storyline, instead offering an open world where the player may take on different roles and factions. This medieval-era game was always intended to be played with mods, with Warband being a stand-alone expansion that includes new features and balance changes from the base game.

RedWantsCandy’s video is set up in a way so the viewer can skip ahead to the different parts of the customization process, and he also uploads charts with specific stat boosts that each world choice will give to the character. It’s really helpful to have that visual, since the game itself doesn’t give you your stats and abilities until after you’ve chosen your backstory. Then you can finally adjust your appearance, and Red wastes no time in jumping into gameplay with this example character.

Not many games let you have a blind eye. Will you cast yours on the wicked?

3. Baldur’s Gate 2: Shadows of Amn

Baldur's Gate - Enhanced Edition: Character Creation Guide

Baldur’s Gate 2 is the second installment in the popular video game series adapted from the official Dungeons and Dragons tabletop RPG, specifically the 2nd edition Advanced DnD. Much like tabletop games, the player is allowed to act as peacefully or aggressively as they choose, including attacking and killing NPCs (if you’re set on playing a murder hobo, this is how). Through both interacting with the world as well as combat, the player and their party must track down a dangerous elven mage who has been seeking immortality through human (or elven, dwarven, halfling, etc) experimentation.

Quill18 is very passionate and runs you through the pre-generated character creation quickly, explaining each class and race in a general sense before getting more complicated later on. With more quirks and specifications to each race and class than in the more current 5th edition of DnD, quill18 makes complicated attributes seem simple.

The classic 90s videogame pickup line: Are you a boy? Or a girl?

2. Diablo III

Diablo III: Lets Play - Part 1 - Character Creation, Tips and Advice

A dark and moody setting where the battle rages on between the divine forces of good and evil, Diablo III is an isometric hack and slash where the player must battle monsters and break down environmental barriers to reach the end of each dungeon. The player must progress through the game to the point where Diablo is resurrected and becomes the most powerful demon- and they must defeat him, lest he destroys the High Heavens and disrupts the balance of heaven and hell.

This is a very thorough guide that not only takes you through the creation process, but also gives you tips on builds and gameplay. The guests in this video give more details to each class, giving you a chance to plan out how to play to your strengths as a player whether that’s offense, defense or support.

If a game gives you the option to be a demon hunter, you should be a demon hunter.

1. Dark Souls III

Dark Souls 3 -- Character Creation -- Male and Female

Dark Souls III is an action/role playing game that pits the dead player against other dead, and very deadly, monsters. With a slew of classes, gifts and attributes, Dark Souls III lets the player start out with as powerful or as weak a character they want, with the ability to increase each of 10 stats as they progress through the game. With plenty of multiplayer options and endless ways of killing zombies, Dark Souls III has much to offer for players looking to polish their skills.

This video on the game’s character creation shows every class option for both male and female models, going through nearly every possibility of customization available. After creating the character it’s then shown in-game, to get a better feel of what the character would look like outside of the harsh lighting of the creation page.
