Fallout 4 is still one of the best-selling games of all time, with players still only just beginning to dip their toes into our post-apocalypse world today. I know I was pretty late to the Fallout party myself! Just like myself, players still enjoy exploring the wasteland with the freedom to do almost anything they want. With many different choices and ways to play, the possibilities are endless!
With so much to talk about in Fallout 4, let’s focus on one of the many aspects that keep our sole survivor alive. No, not god mode, armor! We aren’t allowing mods here!
Here is my top 10 list of the Commonwealth’s most powerful armor and where to find them.
10. Mechanist’s Armor
A Halloween costume with a purpose!
Yes, this 1950's sci-fi-inspired outfit can be quite useful to our sole survivor. Not only is it cool looking and quirky, but it has also pretty decent stats when it comes to protection. Besides, who wouldn’t want to roam the wasteland looking like a Doctor Who Cyberman cosplayer?
Yes, this costume has 85 points of both damage and energy resistance. So, it’s handy when you’re in a firefight.
For players who want to acquire this nifty gear, all you have to do is complete the Automatron DLC. Simple, right?
9. Synth Armor
Now, I wouldn’t use this one myself as it kinda makes my character look like a stormtrooper. However, you don’t have to look pretty to survive in an apocalyptic world, right?
The synth armor is useful against robotic enemies, especially synths themselves. The set comes in three tiers of standard, sturdy and heavy. The full armor set has a combined 112 points of damage resistance and a combined energy resistance of 131 points. Therefore making it the ideal armor against laser weapons.
To acquire the armor is simple. Go around and kill a bunch of synths and collect all of the armor pieces, or, if you are friendly with the Institute, go to the requisition officer and buy the parts you need for the set. However, it is slightly harder to get the heavy armor set as you need to be over level 20 for the chances of the heavy tier armor to be available to buy.
8. Combat Armor
This armor is very similar to the synth armor, just…you know…less synthetic.
The armor is pre-war, used by the U.S military during the events that happened two hundred years ago. As the male sole survivor used to be in the military himself, perhaps it will give him just a little bit of familiarity as he's shooting down his enemies.
With a combined 111 points of both damage and energy resistance, this is a decent way to protect your sole survivor from the harshness of the wasteland at any point of the game. Just like the synth armor, this set also comes in the standard, sturdy and heavy tiers. It’s a good all-rounder and can be found in many locations across the Commonwealth. Mostly, the armor can be found on Gunner enemies. The best way to get a complete set would be to head to the Gunners Plaza and kill as many as you can to form your set. However, they will be level 20 or above, so make sure you build up your level first. The easiest way would be to buy parts of the armor from different vendors throughout the Commonwealth. But the RAREST way to get a complete set of this armor is through a random encounter. Our sole survivor will meet an NPC named Absalom, who is wearing a full set. If you want, you can kill them and take their armor. That’s the way it is sometimes, am I right?
7. Operator’s Heavy Armor
With Nuka World DLC, players can obtain a set of metal armor worn by a group of raiders who call themselves "The Operators". Although not too pretty to look at, this set gives your character plenty of protection. Besides, do any raiders care about how they look?
With a full set, you get 127 points of both damage and energy resistance, which you will need to fight off all those new enemies in Nuka World.
To get the armor, simply kill as many operators as you can until you get a full set. No, too hard for you? No worries! Just head over to any of the slave vendors in Nuka World, they might just have what you need.
6. Silver Shroud Costume
Who wants to cosplay as a pre-war vigilante? Well, you can!
When in/close to Goodneighbour, turn on your radio to find the Silver Shroud channel. It plays pre-war episodes of the hero, aired by Kent Connolly in the memory den. He will tell you about the costume in Hubris Comics. Careful, there are a bunch of ghouls inside and a glowing one right next to where the costume displays. Once you get the costume, you can keep it without finishing the quest, but you'll miss out on some fun cosplay. Kent will give you missions to take on as the Silver Shroud and it unlocks unique dialogue while interacting with certain NPCs while wearing the costume. It's quite amusing.
The costume is lightweight with some added advantages. Not only does it have 87 damage and energy resistance points, but it also has 15 points of radiation resistance. Better still, it adds 1 point to the player's agility and perception. For a costume that is mainly cosmetic, it holds up pretty good as unique functional armor.
5. Destroyer’s Armor
Now, this may look like we are covering combat armor again. In truth, yes, it is combat armor. But the Destroyer’s armor has extra perks that make it unique from the regular combat aromor you can find all over the Commonwealth. With this armor, it gives your character the legendary effect of reducing human damage by 15%. The helmet itself gives the player an extra point in both charisma and intelligence.
To get the armor, you have to buy it from different vendors. The chest piece and left leg can be bought from Daisy’s Discounts in Goodneighbor. To get the helmet, head over to Covenant and purchase it from Penny Fitzgerald. Then it's time to find the left arm. Go to Bunker Hill and purchase the armor piece from Deb. Then, finally, the right leg. That can be purchased from Alexis Combes in Vault 81. Yeah, a lot of travelling around. But at least you get a unique armor set in the end. Besides, that’s what fast travel is for!
4. Disciple’s Heavy Armour
More armor from the raiders of Nuka World. This time, it’s from the Disciples. A bunch of murderous psychos who believe in “the bloodier, the better.” Yeah, a really fun bunch…
I won’t lie, the armor does look awesome and fits in perfectly in the apocalypse setting. With damage resistance points of 122 and energy resistance of 140, you can’t go wrong. They may be blood-thirsty lunatics, but they know how to protect themselves.
Like the Operators armor, these pieces can be looted from the Disciples you kill, or purchased by the slave vendors at Nuka World.
3. Marine Armor
Now here is an awesome suit of armor. The set can be heavy but offers the most protection you can get from a non-power armor set. It is unrivalled in terms of defence. With 267 points of damage resistance, 266 points of energy resistance and 60 points of radiation resistance. Besides power armor, this set is unmatched. You can obtain this hardcore set by going through all of DiMA’s “Best Left Forgotten” quest. This gives you the full set. However, the set can be purchased bit by bit by vendors in the Nucleus…or you can kill a bunch of the Children of Atom and loot pieces from their corpses. Hey, each to their own!
2. T-60 Power Armor
Yes, we’ve finally gotten to the Power Armor!
It may not be the strongest armor in the game, but it’s still rather impressive. It is much easier to repair and a lot easier to find in the Commonwealth. It’s a must when going up against the big bosses of the apocalypse.
It's pre-war, used by the military before the bombs fell. Even at its most basic, it has over 1000 points of damage and radiation resistance. However, you can modify and upgrade it to be way more powerful and give yourself some extra perks. The only downside, it burns through fusion cores very fast. So, it’s great in small doses. Just make sure you stock up and power cores, unless you want to be stuck fighting a deathclaw in a dead suit of armor.
1. X-01 Power Armor
Now, this is what I call apocalypse-ready armor! It’s experimental and quite rare, but it’s worth it.
This awesome power armor set has a whopping 1,220 points of damage resistance, 1,050 radiation resistance and 790 energy resistance. But wait, it gets better! When you upgrade the armor, it can give you 1,820 points of damage resistance and 1,390 energy resistance. What else could you possibly need?! Well, the downside is it requires a lot of repairs. But with those numbers, it must be worth it!
To obtain the armor, you have to do a lot of fighting. After you reach level 30, go to the building on the right side of Goodneighbor called 35 Court. It's a hostile building full of many enemies, anything that runs at you, kill it! Even after all the killing, you get in an elevator to the top floor, only to be met by a not-so-welcoming Sentry Bot and his Assultron buddy.
If you manage all that, the armor is yours for the taking!
